When it comes to conversation topics, the subject of death and how one is going to die is usually not the most exhilarating topic people may talk about, but it does create opportunities for people to dwell on the idea and to contemplate how it would affect their lives and the lives of people around them. If asked how they would like to die, I believe a good majority of people will say that they want to die a good death. Rob Moll’s book The Art of Dying has been written to discuss the idea of a good death, specifically the Christian idea of a good death, and how we can begin to start familiarizing and even be welcoming to our eventual demise. Most people would think that patients who are dying would need rehabilitative therapy from physical therapists, but we still play an important role during their end of life. Even if the patient is dying, I as a physical therapist am still considered a support system, and not only just for the patient but for the family and friends of the patient as well. It is my responsibility to make the patient feel comfortable and normal, as well as to relieve the patient from any pain or distressing symptoms he or she may be experiencing. From a Christian perspective, I also need to be able to integrate the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care during our sessions.
The book has also helped me put my own life into perspective and to think about my time spent at Loma Linda University and studying to be a physical therapist. The journey of just getting here in this point of my life may have been long, but I believe that God has allowed certain events to occur that allowed me to be here because it was part of His divine plan for my life. If God had wanted me to attend Loma Linda University so that I may become a physical therapist and somehow bless someone’s life through therapy, then I can die happily knowing that I glorified Him through how I lived my
