The army and railroad played many roles in western resettlement. The army aided in settlement by suppressing the Native Americans who were opposed to giving up their land, conforming to the settlers’ new way of life, or who refused to move to reservations. Between 1860 and 1890, many Native American tribes were almost in a state of war with the US Army. The Natives were not only fighting to preserve their land but also their deeply rooted culture that has been with them for centuries. But the Native Americans were at a disadvantage. They did not have the technology or manpower to defeat the army and the incoming settlers.
