Most people may be opposed because they may feel that graffiti taints their neighborhood or gives off the impression that there is a lot of criminal activity taking place. Graffiti links people together regardless of cultural, lingual, or racial differences. It is a unique display of talent and should be regarded as such. Graffiti provides a sense of freedom from repressive political and economic order. Artists may also feel like they are rebelling and making a statement against the usage of property. They are essentially demonstrating that they are not just any regular artists. They are trying to build a category of their own. It is always changing and progressing as an art form. Graffiti is similar in this manner in which it is found in places that may be seen as spontaneous. Others may be opposed to graffiti because of some types may display a sort of rebellion against society or politics. However, graffiti can be an effective way to display emotions and ideas. It can influence groups of people to demonstrate their emotions and express their dissatisfaction with the status quo. Graffiti art is culturally resistant because of its spontaneous display and sends a message to the people. Graffiti artists are found all over the world and come together in crews to demonstrate art as a “ritual transgression against a repressive political and economic order.” (Stowers, Graffiti Art). This demonstrates that graffiti artists may be trying to convey that they are rebelling and it provides some sort of freedom to express their discontent. Many people believe that there is nothing progressive about allowing public amenities to be defaced by graffiti; they also believe that graffiti is connected to crime and the neighborhood will be labeled negatively.
