The American Visionary Art museum is a very original and beautifully decorated structure. It was raining the day I went to visit, but it was beautiful nonetheless. The structure itself is architectural marvel. It has a very unusual shape and structure which makes it very aesthetically pleasing. The outside is covered with glass, mirror pieces and other materials. There is a giant whirligig located outside of this main building that is known as Baltimore’s most beloved outdoor sculptural landmark. The sculpture is a wind powered structure created by a 76 year old mechanic/farmer named Vollis Simpson. Mr. Simpson created this structure as a saluted to Federal Hill and Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness.
The AVAM is a much different structure from that of the BMA. The BMA is a much more plain building that that of the AVAM. The AVAM is structured around a large spiral staircase that takes you from floor to floor. The main building is 35,000 square feet and contains six galleries. The BMA is a much larger structure containing a more galleries than the AVAM. The contemporary wing of the BMA had many large scale paintings spread out in the wing. The AVAM seemed to put the paintings, sculptures and such closer together. This could be because the AVAM is a smaller building than that BMA.
The first piece I noticed when I walked into the heart of the AVAM was The World’s First Robot Family by Devon Smith (1926-2003). The robot family was a set of sculptures consisting of 6 people and a dog. The family was made with recycled appliances, lights, rubber gloves, and hoses. The family members moved their body parts in a robotic manner and had blinking lights on them.
Another set of pieces that caught my attention were that of John “Eddie” Welch. There were 37 mixed media murals on masonite hung around the room. They showed support for figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Jesse Owens, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and Jackie Robinson. The phrase “we need you” was repeated in many of the murals such as George Washington Carver and Stevie Wonder. These members were obviously supportive of African American culture and the equality of men. These murals were very bold and political in nature.
Jack Bruno was a visionary artist that interested me very much. His paintings were bold, striking, unusual and strangely beautiful. They caught my eye because of their bold color and attention to detail.
Benny Andrew's work is in the permanent collections of numerous thirty most important museums, including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Sculpture Garden, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Institute and also other several instituted I mentioned above.
Obesity is a rising problem in the United States. With obesity rates on the rise something must be done to prevent this massive issue. There are ways to help including educating at young ages, improving nutrition facts at restaurants, and providing more space for citizens to get physically active.
The Columbus Museum of Art is a place rich in local history. A place where items of historical and artistic value are stored for safekeeping and allow access for public viewing. The museum has several locally named galleries. It also has a cute children’s area, complete with artwork from little local artists from several schools in the area. The children’s area has several pieces of art that children may touch, like Chicken George. I remember touching that chicken when I would visit as a child. The area also has a mini art studio to cater to the little creative minds that pass through.
The exhibit that I viewed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art was one about European Art between the years 1100-1500. This was a series of paintings, sculptures, architecture, and tapestry of the Medieval and Early Renaissance as well as objects from the Middle East. This exhibit was an important part of the history of the Philadelphia Museum of Art because for the first time, Italian, Spanish, and Northern European paintings from the John G. Johnson collection were shown. It gave me a good idea of what the paintings were like in these four centuries and reflected ideas of both the east and the west.
Death penalty has always been a topic of controversy. Interchangeably known as capital punishment, death penalty legalizes the authorization to sentence the execution of a criminal. Controversy that rise from death penalty involve the notion of ethics and epistemology. Many people questions whether it is morally right to take another person’s life, tieing into the 8th amendment that prohibits people from suffering from a certain type of punishment. Another factor is that what exactly determines whether a person deserves execution or not. The justice system has the legal dilemma of properly determining to what extent of a crime committed is reprehensible enough to face death or if it is not as grave and more suitable with merely a life sentence.
Clinicians are instructed to do no harm and to provide some type of benefit towards people. Providing rehabilitation instead of punishment would benefit not only the wards but, members of the community as well. We could do this by demolishing the vast majority of our prison systems and replacing them with secure housing where they are “re-structured” as individuals. Restructuring them as individuals allows many opportunities for them such as, earning high school and college degrees, job opportunities, as well as, teaching them how to treat others and what is morally right and wrong. Rehabilitating them with the necessities of life on the inside can deter crime rates on the outside because, they will have survival skills. Prisoners should be taught with the same respect in which, we would want them to treat others with on the
Items displayed in museums hold historical significance and are representative of society’s culture. Preserving valuable collections for education and enjoyment is a primary role of museums. While fulfilling this role, the architecture of the museum is also an important factor. Historical buildings are converted into museums and architects must consider the use of the space and the museum’s purpose during their initial design. Other museums are built with a clear purpose in mind. As museums are designed, many characteristics are determined. Display and storage spaces as well as visitor services impacts museum’s functionality. Based on the function of a museum, architectural requirements are different.
The Museum Of Modern Art “MOMA” was firmly established on 53rd street in 1939 in Midtown Manhattan New York, after a decade of moving due to its growth in modern art pieces. Originally Patrons Miss Lillie P. Bliss, Mrs. Cornelius J. Sullivan, and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Jr. wanted to establish a program dedicated to modern art in the late 1920s. A. Conger Goodyear, Paul Sachs, Frank Crowninshield and Josephine Boardman Crane, whom later became trustees, created the Museum Of Modern Art in 1929. It’s founding Director, Alfred H. Barr, Jr. wanted the MOMA to be "the greatest museum of modern art in the world." Its intent was to provide ordinary blue collar individuals with a better understanding and acknowledgment of art in its era.
One pleasant afternoon, my classmates and I decided to visit the Houston Museum of Fine Arts to begin on our museum assignment in world literature class. According to Houston Museum of Fine Art’s staff, MFAH considers as one of the largest museums in the nation and it contains many variety forms of art with more than several thousand years of unique history. Also, I have never been in a museum in a very long time especially as big as MFAH, and my experience about the museum was unique and pleasant. Although I have observed many great types and forms of art in the museum, there were few that interested me the most.
Decades after World War One, a new building style emerged and continues to affect architecture to this day. Modernism is less concern about ornaments and holds at a higher priority the purpose and structure of a building. One superb example is The Kimbell Art Museum located in Fort Worth, Texas. This Museum continues to hold prestige in the public eye. Kahn was able to successfully use natural light and material that emphasize his architecture, while not over shadowing the art work displayed. These are few reasons of why The Kimbell Art Museum is an ideal museum that has only contributed to the modern age. This work of art is what many buildings and museums have always longed to be.
There will be a day when driving will not require a license. Children will be traveling on their own, teens will be texting while driving, adults will be doing their jobs while driving, and the elderly who are visually or physically impaired will be able to transport themselves (Symonds). This will be made possible through new technological car advancements that will enable a car to be driverless. With technology increasing exponentially, and our everyday lives getting busier and busier, we need a solution. Weeks of productivity are lost each year by Americans (Pollette). Driverless cars will cause this issue to vanish by reducing delays and smoothing traffic flow (Winston). Most technology will have flaws, and this is also true for driverless cars’ technology. Improvements are being made to enhance the car (Pollette), but accidents will still take place. Despite the flaws, driverless cars will make trips shorter, and when trips are long, we will be able to multitask.
The Natural History Museum is extraordinary place to explore and learn. It’s fun and breathtaking. The museum served as an agricultural fairground from 1872 until 1910. The original structure of the building from the 1913 and today’s structure are combined with a blend of many styles. Like a Spanish Renaissance ornamentation in the terracotta trimmings. There is a Romanesque style in the arched windows and the brick walls. The Beaux-Arts tradition is a T-shape floor plan. The building measures 75 feet in diameter with three wings. The Rotunda’s walls are made of Italian marble and the floors have a mosaic tile. The statue in the center of the floor called “Three Muses.” The Rotunda’s dome is 58 feet high with a skylight 20 feet across on top, which has been restored recently into a bright colored stained glass design. The museum had its first grand opening on November 6, 1913 and was called “The Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science, and Art. It was opened formally to the public. The museum was joined by other major cultural facilities in the park; the Memorial Coliseum, Sports Arena, Swimming Stadium, California Science Center, California African American Museum and the largest Municipal-Owned Rose Garden in the nation, with a beautiful water fountain in the center.
...mption of food and physical activity. To make their children more active, parents should stop buying videogames and set a time limit to decrease the amount of time their children spend in front of a computer screen. Another way to increase physical activity is to encourage children to join an extra-curricular activity. Although it is easiest to prevent obesity at a young age, many people in the United States grow up obese or become obese. To help and to encourage adults who are suffering from obesity, they need to learn the life-threatening effects that accompany the “heavy” burden.
To my belief keeping the long view by Blight meant to keep in mind the struggle of the UGRR movement and people involved and never fall back in the shackles of racism. Learning and studying UGRR should mean keep in mind always the ethical and moral values and treat each other with equality and respect regardless of religion, race or color. The real lesson Blight wants us to understand by keeping long view is to be tolerant, open minded and ethical all thorough our lives.
Obesity is one of the most dangerous health issues not only in the United States, but across the world. In my opinion our government should pay serious attention to how they plan to find solutions to this dilemma. The futures of those children rely on the help that we provide for them. If they aren’t being taken care of how can we expect to save other people with other types of issues? It is easy for others to think obesity can be solved from one to another. However they fail to realize that in order to fix this problem they will have to work on it little by little. In conclusion obesity can be deadly so be aware of the consequences obesity has so that our children can live a healthy and normal life.
