Recommended: Frontier myths of the west

One of the most well-known and important myths in American culture is the American frontier. The particular era symbolizes certain moral and ethical values in America that were represented in a time where the country grew from the East Coast settlement, to a coast-to-coast progressive nation. Paul Bunyan’s story is easily one of the most famous myths of the American Frontier. He represented the pioneers of that time, although the challenges and conditions of the actual frontiersmen and pioneers did not quite live up. Although Bunyan’s stories were not published until the early twentieth century, his stories were passed down by people telling the tale of the “Last of the Frontier Demigods” (Hoffman, 199). “Paul Bunyan was the most famous …show more content…

The motivation and drive behind the progression was opportunity, expansion, and concepts such as Manifest Destiny, out “God given” right to expand (Bowles, 2011). The idea of the frontier was significant in American culture between 1860 and 1893 because it was considered by many to be “the last frontier” (Jackson, 1920). Since the start of the European settlements, expansion in the West had always aided in inspiring those that dreamed of a new life. The importance to the American people rose more than ever when the last of the frontier was immersed into civilization. The closing of the American Frontier “marked the closing of a great historical movement” (Harris, 2008). Initially, the frontier was predominantly to the East, with heavy European influence. As he would journey into a territory and establish a settlement, his family would help with farming and essential needs. The women and children would plow crops and prepare food, while the man hunted and built shelter. Basically, these families were isolated from roads, schools, churches, and other settlements. They had an opportunity to be the first settlers in a new land, preparing for the arrival of new settlers. The labor and isolation from society was a challenge to them, depending only on the members of the family and cut off from the world. As people started to come into the land after them and settle, the close of the frontier came to pass. These frontiersman and early settlers transitioned into pioneers, innovating into innovations and progressive development. Frederick Jackson Turner outlines the frontier thesis in his essay “The Significance of the Frontier in American History”. Furthermore, he argues that the communitarian values experienced on the frontier carry over to America’s unique perspective on democracy. In his essay “The Trouble with Wilderness; or, Getting Back to the Wrong Nature”, William Cronon argues that many scholars, Turner included, fall victim to the false notion that a pristine, untouched wilderness existed before European intervention. As Frederick Jackson Turner says, the greatest force or influence in shaping American democracy and society had been that there was so much free land in America and this profoundly affected American society. Motives After the revolution, the winning of independence opened up the Western country and was hence followed by a steady flow of settlers to the Mississippi valley. By 1840, 10 new western states had been added to the Federal union. The frontier line ran through Iowa, Missouri and Arkansas on the western side of the river. All parts of the valley except Wisconsin and Minnesota were well populated. Thus a whole new section had been colonized with lasting effects on the American institutions, ideals and ways of living. The far west was the land of high mountains, deserts, strange rock formations, brilliant colors and immense distance. Fur trade with Europe had now become a lucrative business and the fur traders became the pathfinders for the settlers. Migration was now possible by the discovery of paths over which ox-driven carts could be driven through seeking mountains and across the western desert. People wanted to move away from the overcrowded cities and this led to the migration into the uninhabited lands. Increased transportation like roads, railroads and canals and their construction created a demand for cheap labor making it easier for people to get jobs now, in contrast with the cities where there was unemployment. The pioneer movement for 70 years after the revolution roughly represented the form of 3 parallel streams, flowing westwards from New England, Virginia and South Carolina. The first pioneer groups tended to move directly westward. Thus the new Englanders migrated into western New York and along the shores of the great lakes, Virginians into Kentucky and then into Missouri and the South Carolinians and Georgians into the gulf territories. Throughout the settlement of the Mississippi valley, most pioneers did not travel long distances and as a territory had been occupied, families would move into the adjacent one. The development of the west was, in fact, A Century of Dishonor.” The frontier thesis, which Turner proposed in 1893 at the World’s Columbian Exposition, viewed the frontier as the sole preserver of the American psyche of democracy and republicanism by compelling Americans to conquer and to settle new areas. This thesis gives a somewhat quixotic explanation of expansion, as opposed to Helen Hunt Jackson’s book, A Century of Dishonor, which truly portrays the settlement of the west as a pattern of cruelty and conceit. Thus, the frontier thesis, offered first in The Significance of the Frontier in American History, is, in fact, false, like the myth of the west. Many historians, however, have attempted to debunk the mythology of the west. Specifically, these historians have refuted the common beliefs that cattle ranging was accepted as legal by the government, that the said business was profitable, that cattle herders were completely independent from any outside influence, and that anyone could become a cattle herder.
