What is the American Dream? As James Truslow coined in 1931 " A dream of land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper class to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, able be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position"(Truslow). The American Dream is something that most Americans strive to obtain most of their lives. Opportunities are all round us it 's just whether are circumstance allow us to take them. Like have a financially unstable home, being unable to attend school or being able to take care of themselves. According to King " The American Dream of dream of today is a trimmed down version of it 's former self "(King 611). In other words, King believes back then this was the definition of the American Dream, but as the years of generations have passed, they have added and changed the definition of the dream allowing it to be more achievable for everyone. I agree that it’s a trimmed down version of its self that we as a generation have changed what the American dream was like. As it states in the infographic, in the silent generation only 14% (Column) find it absolutely critical to complete the dream, while others don’t find that much of an interest in completing the dream in their lifetime. While the years going forward, the generations started seeing that the dream is as important as it seems.By Generation Y, 55% saw that the American Dream is something you need to work on to achieve in their lifetime (Column). The dream is about your abilities and achievements that you accomplish, like the ability to go to college and graduate. Have successful job that will allow more financial stability in their environment to allow a chance to complete the dream. Like building a family or getting married. Though 29% in the infographic said they would take a feeling a sense of personal fulfillment in their life as one their achievements (Column).
