The American Dream depicts the dream or aspiration of a person or a group to become Americanized and become part of the American society. According to the Oxford dictionary, education is the process of learning and teaching someone about a certain topic or subject. Many immigrants come to the United States with the hope to be able to complete the American Dream where they are able to have a good education, a good job, and where they can get a better life than the place they come from. The United States is known for its good education and it focuses on the education from early childhood until twelfth grade. The United States tests the students every year on certain subjects to see if the student has learned what they need to learn during the …show more content…
It has been presented like this to African Americans and Latinos when they are not able to overcome the obstacles facing them in the schooling system of the United Sates which makes their American Dream come to disappoint them. The environment that African Americans and Latinos are surrounded with influence the student to not move forward with their education. Many of the students who are African Americans and Latinos are influenced by the existence of gang members, drug dealers, and thefts in their neighborhoods (Gándara and Contreras 15). Furthermore, African Americans and Latinos live in poor neighborhoods which open the doors for a Pandora’s box of crimes to happen. This influences the good students to drop out before they could graduate from high school and they can have the opportunity to go to a community college at least. Minority groups who live in neighborhoods who are really poor, have a lot of illegal activity face danger to them and their family. If you ask these students to describe the good in their neighborhood, the majority of them would say that there is nothing good in their neighborhood (Vega, Moore, and, Miranda 47). Since little kids, they are taught to never get in no one’s business if not you might and will end up dead in the front of your parents’ house. Also, they are taught that when they hear a shotgun to run inside their house to protect themselves from the bullets and not end up dead in the middle of a drive by or a fight against rival
The American Dream can be accomplished with the right tools. In “The American Dream” by Martin C. Jischke he states,“ I represent just one of many millions of Americans whose lives and futures have been changed by the power of education” (74). Jischke’s
It may be hard to imagine a person dropping everything in his or her life, leaving behind many possessions, friends, and family, only to start again in a new country. Imagine a person coming to America with only the clothes on his or her back and whatever that person could carry. If one can overcome these hardships, like many immigrants to America had to experience, and make a name for himself or herself, that is experiencing the American Dream. The American Dream, a stereotypical viewpoint of one being able to move to America with nothing and become successful. This success is achieved through a gradual process of an adoption of the American culture by drowning the past and receiving an education for the future.
The American Dream was derived from the United States Declaration of Independence which states that, “All mean are created equal” and that they are “endowed by their creator with certain inalienable Rights” including “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness” (US 1776). This means that every person has equal opportunity
There are various individuals throughout the world who believe that the American Dream cannot be achieved by all people. Those who agree with this view believe that our culture contains too many roadblocks and obstacles. Some of these obstacles include prejudice, poverty, and social inequality. Another view on this matter is that others believe that America is the “Land of Opportunity”. They also believe that if you can believe it, you can achieve it. Back in the early 20th century, The American Dream meant something to people; nowadays it is a term that various people loosely throw around. The American Dream is not realistic because it is not attainable to everyone like Cal Thomas presumes and although education, budget cuts and lack of employment may seem of some concern to only a small group of people, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about the status of the economy.
The American Dream is the belief that anybody can achieve anything in life. America is known as the country of opportunity regardless of race, gender or nationality. The land of opportunity and equality rights and liberty. The American Dream is to be successful no matter what social class an individual belongs to. The opportunity for upward mobility through hard work leads to a successful life. Individuals in society often strive to obtain many resources that are important. The structure of the economy is typically related to education, occupation, housing, and health care which are not distributed equally to enable an individual to achieve equal opportunity some will have to go through hardship in order to obtain it. The lack of social mobility makes the
America. Even people who have immigrated to the United State of America have achieved goals in life that couldn’t been achieved in their homeland. There are many different ways to look at American Dreams, in today's time there is still truth that's it is somewhat possible for a certain people, even if it's about fame, wealth, and love in life. The American Dream is quite possible because its controlling a person's destiny in life to be successful and living freely. The American Dream is relates to freedom, happiness and mostly money.
The ‘American Dream’ means different things to each individual. What the ‘American Dream’ means to me is that I’m an American citizen who is free to do as I please under certain circumstances of course. I understand that many people have troubles trying to achieve this ‘American Dream’ though. If you look at the illegal immigrant problem, they have problems achieving this American Dream. I know that to get into the United States of America, you have to take a test, along with years of being in the system until you’re picked. You also cannot be a criminal and either you come here to work or you come here to stay; it costs quite a bit as well to achieve this dream. In my opinion it makes me mad when people come here illegally and claim that they
America is in a Great Recession, and the American Dream seems to be dying (if not already dead) to many Americans. I don’t think that the American Dream is dead; it just needs rehabilitation due to the injuries it sustained from the hands of an unregulated government. Though we are in a Great Recession, every American can progress their lives for the betterment of themselves and future generations. According to Brandon King (2011) in The American Dream: Dead, Alive, or on Hold?: “…the most worrisome problem is inequality: that wealth is concentrated into the hands of a rich minority.” Because of this, many Americans and politicians are arguing about either “raising the taxes on the rich” or “supporting the richest sectors in America” (Thomas, 2011) to stimulate the economy. In the articles I have read in They Say, I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, both Cal Thomas and Brandon King seem to believe that the government should not tax the rich minority more than the poor majority. I disagree with both Cal and Brandon and believe that the rich should be taxed more than the poor. However, the income from the taxes should be put to use for the betterment of the poor majority of America.
The American Dream is about not giving up. It is about working relentlessly through the hours of the day at two or even three jobs to supply your family with a sufficient income. It is about overcoming the language barrier, the achievement gap, and the limitations at any school or work force. To me the American Dream is about seeing the results of your dedicated hard work and paying it forward to those who are working just as hard to thrive. The American Dream cannot be measured based on the abundance of tangible goods; it cannot be taken superficially. Rather it is driven by not letting the lack of sustainable income or resources hold you back from achieving your greatest potential. The American Dream is still thriving today thanks to the entrepreneurs taking a lead in
What is the American Dream? When this question was asked on the first day of class, there were many different answers as to what makes up the American Dream. Some people said having a good job, having a nice home, and making good money. While others said living in a country where one has political freedom, we have equal rights, and there is safety for children. Educational opportunities, such as going to college as came up in the discussion. However, the components of the dream, can be different for each person, especially for those who are migrating to this country. One example was found, in an article that appeared in the newspaper USA Today, titled "Immigrants Want Land of Opportunity". In this article different people give their versions and opinions of the American Dream. Jesse Valdez tells the story of how her mother came into this country from Mexico, in hopes of finding a better life. However the better life was not for her it was for her children. She gave up ever
To do what makes oneself happy. The American Dream is represented in many different ways and every person lives and chases a different version of the American Dream. Chris McCandless lived his American dream by walking alone into the wilderness of Alaska. The song written by Toby Keith, “American Soldier”, shows the price some pay for their dreams and ours to come true. Jay Gatsby died trying to acheive his dream and get the girl he loved, but died happy because he had pursued her until his death. The band All Time Low wrote a song called “The Reckless and The Brave” that brings a new light to how we go about achieving our dreams. So I believe that the American Dream is all about doing what will make you the happiest in the end.

One of the reasons that the American Dream is still alive is that there are so many opportunities everyday. Most public schools provide students with the necessities they need to succeed, so it is up to them whether or not one decides to use those necessities to achieve a goal. Most students in high school have an idea or dream of what they want their future to be like after high school. College is an example of an American Dream, where student loans, scholarships, graduation coaches, and the ability to re-take the ACT are many opportunities to help one reach that goal. Some may choose to study abroad, which can be obtained affordably by getting a job or raising funds.
The American Dream is a personal thing. Every person’s belief or thought on what the American Dream is different than anybody else’s. There is one noticeable common thread between every conceivable Dream though: the dream is to live a better life socially, monetarily, or contentedly than your parents did. The conflicts at the time helps determine what aspect of life you wish to improve upon, but it will always be the same principal as long as America stands free.
