Hippopotamuses are very fascinating animals to study and observe. With their semiaquatic lifestyle, they appear to be more closely related to whales than other hoofed mammals. Their ability to be versatile in their habitats helps protects them against different dangers that they face. During this research paper I learned many facts about hippopotamuses that I was not previously aware of.
The hippopotamus is a part of the Animalia kingdom and from that it branches into being a part of the phylum, Chordata. They fall into the Mammalia class which flows into the order of Artiodactyla. The hippopotamus belongs to the Hippopotamidea family. The genus they belong to is the Hippopotamus. The species they belong to is H. Amphibious. (Burnie, David & Don E. Wilson, 2011) The pygmy hippopotamus, while it belongs to the same family, falls into a different genus than the common hippopotamus. While the pygmy hippopotamus has a rounded skeleton adapted for spending a majority of the time on land, the common hippopotamus has a spine parallel to the ground which is adapted to spending more time in the water. Also the feet of the common hippopotamus are wider, with more webbing than the pygmy hippopotamus whose feet are narrower for walking on the forest floor. Both the pygmy and common hippopotamus have common traits in their skin that requires a majority of their time to be spent in water to prevent drying and cracking. (“Pygmy Hippopotamus”)
Hippopotamus have many characteristics that help them survive in the environment they live in, found mainly along the lakes, rivers, and swamps of Africa. Their eyes, ears, and nostrils are located along the top of their head which allows them to be under water for long periods of time. Hippopotamuses...

Seahorses are a prime example of species whose atypical biology and unusual global distribution leads to a series of evolutionary questions. Seahorses (genus Hippocampus) are a marine species that have extensively been studied because of their abnormal behaviors in the marine environment compared to other marine creatures. Many of the seahorse species have large ranges, both longitudinally (over a great horizontal distance across the ocean), and latitudinal (great vertical distance within the ocean), regardless of the fact that they are characterized as weak swimmers and lack any large structural fins for efficient swimming (Lourie et al., 1999a). Although they do have these large range environments, seahorses
I visited the Oriental Institute of Chicago Museum, which contains various artifacts, I choose a Model Hippopotamus from Egypt. The hippopotamus is dated to Egypt’s Middle Kingdom, circa 1878 BC. According to wall text at the Oriental Institute of Chicago, hippopotamuses in Egyptian culture represented the enemies of the ruler. I was attracted to the Model Hippopotamus based on its size/shape, lines, texture, and the color.
Although the Hippocampus spp. are placed into the same class as other organisms more traditionally viewed as fish, their morphology bears distinct differences in comparison to other bony fish. The various species belonging under the genus Hippocampus range in maximum size from 20 mm to 300 mm(Foster 8). Their physical appearance is distinct from other members of its class due to their "horse-like head, monkey-like tail, and kangaroo-like pouch."( Lourie et al 12) Morphologically, seahorses do not have scales like traditional fish, but rather posses bony plates covered by skin. The appearance of bony extrusions and skin ...

In this research report I will discuss the Killer Whales unique characteristics; complex migratory patterns, how and why it is endangered, and most importantly how we can help them.
The seahorse's scientific genus name, Hippocampus which is derived from the Greek hippokampus (hippos, meaning “horse,” and kampos, meaning “sea monster”)
“Why Sport Hunting Is Cruel and Unnecessary” asserts “natural predators help maintain this balance by killing only the sickest and weakest individuals.” This is the key concept of natural selection that has proven effective throughout history; however, the introduction of invasive and nonnative species can cause an imbalance in population. Opponents would suggest banning hunting in order to allow populations to return to their natural number, but this ban has been proven ineffective in African counties. “How Hunting Helps Wildlife” outlines the detrimental effects a hunting ban can have on wildlife’s population. At one point in time Kenya banned hunting but reinstated hunting as 70 percent had been poached. The laws and regulations in place allowed the populations to be renewed, rising to their original numbers. While banning hunting may sound promising, it has the opposite effect of what is

After watching several documentaries on how poorly killer whales are treated in captivity, it drew me into researching more information on the treatment of Killer whales that are kept in captivity. I found several scientific journals, and articles on wild life facts of killer whales and I found published books on the treatment of killer whales in captivity. The information I found includes both wild killer whales and killer whales kept in captivity. With the information I found, I plan to prove the shortened lifespan and health problems killer whales get while living in captivity are not normal. In fact the information you learned about killer whales from aquariums and commercial parks are false. This paper will argue why killer whales should not be held captive in commercial parks. This Paper will include information on the killer whale’s diet, the killer whale’s communication, and the killer whale’s physical traits.
pollution is a major factor when it comes to the affect on Hippopotamuses in east Africa.
The common name is the African Elephant, the scientific name is Loxodonta Africana, the phylum is Vertebrata, the class is Mammalia, the order is Proboscidea, and the family is Elephantidae. The Closest Relatives to the African Elephant are: the Asian Elephant, mammoths, primitive proboscidean (mastodons), sea cows, and hyraxes. Scientists believe that the African Elephant evolved from one of its closest relatives, the Sea Cow. The geographical location and range of the African elephant covers all of central and southern Africa. In Ethiopia there are isolated populations that exist around Lake Chad in Mali and Mauritania. Also in Kenya, Rhodesia, Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda, Zaire, and in National parks located in South Africa, as well as several other countries. African Elephants, originally, were found in all of the Sub-Saharan African habitats except desert steppes. Elephants still occupy diverse habitats such as: temperate grassland, tropical savanna and grass lands, temperate forest and rainforest, tropical rainforest, tropical scrub forest, and tropical deciduous forest despite their drastic decline in numbers. However, their migratory patterns and habitat use have changed, due to the fact that they are restricted to protected areas. The elephant can exist in many types of environments but it prefers places that have many trees and bushes, which the elephant needs both for food and shade. They also like warm areas that have plenty of rainfall.
American alligators are found through southern United States. Large populations are found in Florida, New Orleans, Louisiana and Georgia. They inhabit primarily fresh water to brackish water areas, although they can occasionally be found in salt water. However, alligators lack the salt-extra...

Amphibians are animals that are adapted to live on the land and in water habitats (Kolesova, et el, 2007). Young amphibians spend their early life in water breathing through their gills; as they grow they tend to lose their gills and develop lungs which allow them to be adapted to life on land as they will be breathing air (Kolesova, et el, 2007). There are a number of amphibians such as salamanders that do not do not have an aquatic stage in their life, they are completely terrestrial (Kolesova, et el, 2007). Some amphibians do not...
