The Alfred Dreyfus Affair
Alfred Dreyfus affair was a political and legal scandal in 1894-1906. The affair divided France political landscape and viewed as an extreme case of justice miscarriage, and developed global and modern recognizance. This affair involved the conviction of Alfred Dreyfus on charges of treason. He was an artillery officer whose descent was of Alsatian Jewish. Alfred allegedly was guilty of spying for the German government after some letters emerged in military attaches dustbin. As a result, Alfred faced life imprisonment and served jail term at the Devil’s Island (Burns, p. 73). In two years time, the real culprit emerged to be a major in the French Army by the name Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy. High-ranking officials in the military did a cover-up and acquitted Esterhazy of all charges after appealing in the second trial. Ironically, more charges piled up against Alfred while still serving time in prison.
The cover-up by the military emerged to the public attention aided by Emile Zola open letter (J’accuse) in the Paris newspaper in 1898. The letter sparked interests among the activists who pushed the government to reexamine the case. The pressure paid off and in 1899, Alfred Dreyfus received another trial. Meanwhile, intense legal and political scandals intensified and split the French country into two opposing groups. One group supported Alfred Deyfrus mostly the anticlerical (the Dreyfusards) and the others who supported the government mainly the Catholics (the Anti-Dreyffusards). In conclusion, the Alfred Dreyfus Affair represents a historical overview of the past injustices that occurred because of prejudice against the Jewish community. The main propelling forces behind this affair were the anti-Semitic views, military grounds and the discovery of the bordereau. The affair started with the unjust prosecution of an artillery military captain of Alsatian-Jewish background over spying allegations. Later, the country split into two political fronts with one part supporting Dreyfus and another against him. The major force behind this Affair was the prevalent anti –Semitic vies that demonized the Jewish community.
