In his online lecture about the appearance and further development of the age of imperialism, Paul Sargent focuses mainly on the motivations and justifications for imperialism and the difference between the notions of colonialism and imperialism throughout the course of the world history. Moreover, as the historian is convinced, only the correct and deep understanding of the difference between these two crucial historical periods in the world history may enable the society to put the historical things and events in the right context.

Economic motivation was one of the reasons why the age of imperialism had to begin. As the part of the world history, this period of time was marked with the great wake of the first and then second industrial revolutions. The main aim of the imperialists was to create prosperous and powerful societies with the highly developed economic. However, that all required the search of new materials which could empower the market of the empires. Thus, the age of imperialism was also a time of using new rough materials on the market. As a rule, those rough materials were bought from the less developed countries and after being made in imperialistic countries they were sold back to those countries. The second factor which caused the age of imperialism concerned the issue of the diplomatic motivations. Indeed, the diplomatic relations between the European countries was an essential and indispensable part of that time. The example of those might relate to the creation of such countries as Germany and Italy.
