Recommended: Relationship between the colonies and Britain

Massachusetts during 1760’s through 1780’s became the center for the breaking away from Great Britain. Massachusetts had been heavily populated with a military presence at the time and the British had imposed taxes on almost everything. Colonists here were fed up and they had a long uneasy relationship with the British Monarchy which led them to rebel. The colonists provoked the acts of the Boston Massacre and The Boston Tea party which made the king furious. As a result King George III created the Coercive Acts which were a list of punitive laws used to keep the Colonists in place. Essentially a massacre results in either the death of many people or death by cruel means. The Boston Massacre occurred on March 5, 1770, in Boston, Massachusetts and involved American colonists and British troops. The colonists, upset by recent laws enacted by the British, taunted a smaller group of British soldiers by throwing snowballs at them (Boston Massacre Historical Society). In response, the soldiers fired upon the unarmed colonists leaving five people dead and six wounded (Phelan, 131). Even though the event in Boston on March 5, 1770, in which blood was shed, and called the Boston Massacre, the actions which took place on that day did not constitute a massacre. Since only five people were killed and six wounded and there was no evidence of cruelty, the name Boston Massacre was likely a propaganda ploy by Samuel Adams to rally the colonists against the British instead of a true massacre.

As a result of this act being put into place, the colonists had also retaliated by forming the First Continental Congress which was a meeting of the delegates of the thirteen colonies except Georgia because Georgia was a state that homed debtors and criminals.
