The Absurdity of Kafka's The Trial
As I read through Kafka's The Trial I was struck with a fusion of frustration, ubiquity, and the overt absurdity of the story at hand. The most surprising aspect of this conglomeration of feelings was that beyond my overriding reaction of confusion there was and undeniable sense of understanding. As I explored this paradoxical juxtapositioning I came to realize that my relation to this seemingly nonsensical accumulation of conflicting ideas was that I, or rather we as humans are exposed to the bearucratic absurdities illustrated so diligently by Kafka in our every day life, and through no fault but our society, history, or cultures effect on our lives. Once I had established this I could then be able to synthesize the alliteration of the absurd that Kafka presents from the examples that we are faced with in our lives.
Franz Kafka's The Trial is a fictional account of a man who is indicted to a crime that in all actuality has not occurred, or if it has Josef K. (the stories main character) has was unaware that his actions, if their were any, were against the law. One morning Josef K. wakes up to find a team of "officials" in his boarding house. He is told that he cannot leave his house until the examining magistrate speaks with him. These officials then proceed to eat; his breakfast, invade another boarders' room and is told that there is a trial being brought against him. There is no explanation of the charges at hand and no clear delineation of whom, how, or what this trial is about. After a brief account with the examining magistrate he is told to arrive at the courthouse the following Sunday. Herr. K proceeds to this courthouse of sorts the next Sunday to be confronted by a ramshack...

By the time I finished The Trial I had undergone a total revision of my perception of Kafka's use of the absurd. At first I was hampered by the excessive use of erroneous alliteration and was unable to decipher the motivation behind such baseless inconsistencies, but by the conclusion of the novel I was struck with Kafka's ingenious exposé of the true paradoxical correlation between sagacity and the utterly absurd. Through tact and literary manipulation the deliverance of such a transformation was truly articulated and implied in as such away as to completely envelop and situate Kafka's audience in the trials and tribulations of Herr.K's tragic experience, the affect being that of direct relation and therefore uniting the illogicality of the absurd with the irony that was twisted from the absurd.
Kafka’s In the Penal Colony is a story about the use of torture tools which cause death sentences into effect, within 12 hours of torment and the convicted, in the end dies. Lets regard the roots of this subject and its idea of hope....

While it is true that Kafka’s style of writing is considered oblique, it may be interesting to know that many of Kafka's trials and animal metamorphoses are actually derived from common motifs in Jewish folklore (Bruce). If one were to learn about Kafka’s thoroughly extensive knowledge in Judaism, it would be easier to see how Kafka’s thought processes were reflected into his stories.

To fully understand this story, it’s important to have some background information on Franz Kafka. He was born into a German speaking family in Prague on July 3rd, 1883. He was the oldest of six children. His father Harmann Kafka was a business man. His mother Julie Kafka was born into a wealthy family. Kafka considered the vast differences in his paternal and maternal relatives as a “split within himself” (Sokel 1). The Metamorphosis is said to be one of Franz Kafka's best works of literature. It shows the difficulties of living in a modern society and the struggle for acceptance of others when in a time of need. In this novel Kafka directly reflects upon many of the negative aspects of his personal life, both mentally and physically. The relationship between Gregor and his father is in many ways similar to Franz and his father Herrman. The Metamorphosis also shows resemblance to some of Kafka's diary entries that depict him imagining his own extinction by dozens of elaborated methods. This paper will look into the text to show how this is a story about the author's personal life portrayed through his dream-like fantasies.

Franz Kafka, b. Prague, Bohemia (then belonging to Austria), July 3, 1883, d. June 3, 1924, has come to be one of the most influential writers of this century. Virtually unknown during his lifetime, the works of Kafka have since been recognized as symbolizing modern man's anxiety-ridden and grotesque alienation in an unintelligible, hostile, or indifferent world. Kafka came from a middle-class Jewish family and grew up in the shadow of his domineering shopkeeper father, who impressed Kafka as an awesome patriarch. The feeling of impotence, even in his rebellion, was a syndrome that became a pervasive theme in his fiction. Kafka did well in the prestigious German high school in Prague and went on to receive a law degree in 1906. This allowed him to secure a livelihood that gave him time for writing, which he regarded as the essence--both blessing and curse--of his life. He soon found a position in the semipublic Workers' Accident Insurance institution, where he remained a loyal and successful employee until--beginning in 1917-- tuberculosis forced him to take repeated sick leaves and finally, in 1922, to retire. Kafka spent half his time after 1917 in sanatoriums and health resorts, his tuberculosis of the lungs finally spreading to the larynx.
Franz Kafka’s “Before the Law” is often referred to as a parable. Thus, it is logical to approach Kafka’s work as an allegory and search for the deeper meaning underneath the story. We can then try to uncover the identity of the characters; of the gatekeeper, the man from the country, and the Law and subsequently relating them to something that fits the example of the plot; a man’s confused search for god, a man’s quest for happiness but never accomplishing it, a academic’s quest for recognition which never comes. Franz Kafka’s famously translated novel The Trial was thought by many to be strongly influenced by his strong background and affiliations with theater and literature. Within the novel, Kafka refers to various types of the art form including, physical art, performing arts and acting, and the art of how a person moves and/or interacts with others. Critics have argued that Kafka’s background was the influence to the novel, while others strongly disagree. Was Kafka’s references to the performing arts within the novel his way of portraying life as a play, something that is scripted and planned out or was it simply the main character treating his situation as an unrealistic event and a joke?
