The abolitionist movement is mainly about movements that occurred in order to help slavery and it reveals how important figures never gave up to free their people. Many of these historical events happen during the period of Harriet Jacobs. There were a couple of words that were confusing, for example; advocate, denounced, and egalitarianism. Advocate or advocating means to publicly support or recommend a cause. Denounced or denounce means to publicly state something to be wrong. The author chose to use these words because he or she wanted to demonstrate how harsh the situation was in the 1800’s. There is one question that I have about this article, why did the author not have a conclusion? The author has an introduction about the abolitionist movement but his or her last paragraph is about one of the historical events. The author mentions in the article that the abolitionist movement was about emancipating slaves and ending racial discrimination and segregation. The emancipation of slaves started from the 1830’s to the 1870’s and after the year 1840 abolitionists expanded and this led to the Civil War. During the 1820’s the Second Great Awakening had religious revivals which boosted abolitionism such as women’s rights. Later in the 1830’s, a Boston newspaper titled the Liberator, was greatly supported by African-Americans. Also in Boston, in December 1833, delegates of both race and gender met in Philadelphia to start the American Anti-Slavery Society, they stated that slavery was a sin and that they wanted it
The Emancipation Proclamation was a proclamation to free slaves and this proclamation reveals how African-Americans wanted to state their freedom to everyone in the world. In this article there was three words that were complicated to comprehend, which were; henceforward, decipherable, and seceded. Henceforward means that whatever it is that is being stated it will be from that moment on and forever. Decipherable means to find or create the meaning of something. Seceded means for someone or something to be removed from memberships in a union, alliance, political, or religious organization. In this article there were two examples of personification. The first example of personification is, “it captured the hearts and imagination.” This simply means that the Emancipation Proclamation deeply moved Americans, emotionally. The second example of personification is, “secure their own liberty” and this means that slaves just wanted to make sure that they had freedom through the Emancipation Proclamation. In this article the author uses many words like, seceded, promised, liberty, and freedom, to demonstrate that due to the Emancipation Proclamation slaves were now free and they can live in peace from now on. They all find ways to advocate for themselves to protect them from some of the horrors of slavery, such as sexual abuse, verbal abuse, imprisonment, beatings, torturing, killings and the nonexistence of civil rights as Americans or rights as human beings. Also, their keen wit and intelligence leads them to their freedom from slavery, and their fight for freedom and justice for all oppressed people.

It is well known that slavery was a horrible event in the history of the United States. However, what isn't as well known is the actual severity of slavery. The experiences of slave women presented by Angela Davis and the theories of black women presented by Patricia Hill Collins are evident in the life of Harriet Jacobs and show the severity of slavery for black women.
A recurring theme in, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, is Harriet Jacobs's reflections on what slavery meant to her as well as all women in bondage. Continuously, Jacobs expresses her deep hatred of slavery, and all of its implications. She dreads such an institution so much that she sometimes regards death as a better alternative than a life in bondage. For Harriet, slavery was different than many African Americans. She did not spend her life harvesting cotton on a large plantation. She was not flogged and beaten regularly like many slaves. She was not actively kept from illiteracy. Actually, Harriet always was treated relatively well. She performed most of her work inside and was rarely ever punished, at the request of her licentious master. Furthermore, she was taught to read and sew, and to perform other tasks associated with a ?ladies? work. Outwardly, it appeared that Harriet had it pretty good, in light of what many slaves had succumbed to. However, Ironically Harriet believes these fortunes were actually her curse. The fact that she was well kept and light skinned as well as being attractive lead to her victimization as a sexual object. Consequently, Harriet became a prospective concubine for Dr. Norcom. She points out that life under slavery was as bad as any slave could hope for. Harriet talks about her life as slave by saying, ?You never knew what it is to be a slave; to be entirely unprotected by law or custom; to have the laws reduce you to the condition of chattel, entirely subject to the will of another.? (Jacobs p. 55).
In early nineteenth century there was the antislavery movement which was a failure. This people who were fighting for antislavery did not have a great support. They were nice gentle people who argued with an expression of moral disapproval but did not participate in an exert of activities. Organizations were formed to help support the freeing of slaves but these organizations did not have enough economical support to help with the thousands and thousands of slaves reproducing in America. The antebellum American antislavery movement began in the 1820s and was sustained over 4 decades by organizations, publications, and small acts of resistance that challenged the legally protected and powerful institution of slavery and the more insidious enemy of black equality, racism. Abolitionists were always a radical minority even in the free states of the North, and the movement was never comprised of a single group of people with unified motivations, goals, and methods. Rather, the movement was fraught with ambiguity over who its leaders would be, how they would go about fighting the institution of slavery, and what the future would be like for black Americans.
Black and white abolitionists shared common assumptions about the evil of slavery, the "virtue of moral reform", and the certainty of human progress"(1). Schor, Garnet,1877, & Lanngston, 1989). This shared understanding provided "the basic for the interracial solidarity" and cooperation so vital in the crusade against slavery"(2). (Schor and Garnet, 1877). But blacks also brought a distinct perspective to the antislavery movement. Their abolitionism was shaped profoundly by their personal experience and racial oppression. Unlike most white abolitionists, they conceived of antidlavery as an all-encompassion struggle for racial equality, and they took a more pragramatic, less doctrinaire approach to antislavery tactics. The contrast between the two abolitionists -- black and white -- become increasingly apparent in the 1840s and 1850s as black expressed a growing militancy, asserted greater independence, and called for racially exclusive organization and initiatives.

Just because, slavery was no longer permitted, it did not eliminate the ability for sharecropping to exist. The Emancipation Proclamation did not even free all slaves, meaning slaves in the borderline states were not free. The only slaves that were free, were the slaves that were in the states that went against the Union. However, it can be observed that there was a technological and medical revolution.
