I recently went to go see the play The 39 Steps. The play was at Western Illinois university at Horrabin theatre in Horrabin Hall. The play was very interesting. I really enjoyed the plot of the play. As for how I felt on the day of the play I was cold, it was cold outside and was cold inside the theater. Besides the temperature the environment that the play was shown in was great. I liked Horrabin Theatre more than Hainline Theatre because although it was smaller you are closer to the stage its more close and personal with the actors which I enjoyed. I thought it was amazing the play is incredibly funny. The play was a great murder mystery play. Personally I love murder mysteries. I loved how the beginning it is just Richard narrating the play in his flat I honestly did not expect this play to be a murder mystery type play. I didn’t really know anything about this play before going to see it. I was very confused at the beginning it was sort of boring then suddenly a girl gets boring and it was great. As for actors I loved pretty much all of them. I thought that that the actor who played Annabella, Pamela, and Margret. I thought that her accent when playing Annabella was excellent. Really the character Annabella was my absolute favorite. Now lets talk about Richard the actor that played him was so great I loved it I loved the scene when Richard was running from the police and sat in one of the theatre seats and held up a paper and said that he went that way, it was so funny it was like something that happens in Scooby Doo. I loved the two clowns. Two actors playing so many roles they were the funniest characters in the play. I loved everything about this play it is great. I like this play it has Clear conflict a Clear purpose unlike Crumbs From The Table Of Joy which I did not see a point in it. I thought that that play was pointless. This major production for Venice Theater was a success in my opinion. It was well worth doing; as I cant remember a moment that was not full of laughter from the audience, as this play kept everyone on the edge of their seats. They did a fantastic job finding actors and actresses who did outstanding with their rolls. Any escapist would thoroughly enjoy this production.
I thought this play was very tacky in a sense. There were only three actors in the play. Seth Reichgott one the actors played 13 different characters. James Goode plated up to 16 different characters.
I really enjoyed this production of The Dining Room. I have never seen anything so fascinating. I can proudly say I am officially a play lover thanks to this production. Mary Catherine Waltman is an excellent actor. She executed all of her roles very well. She has some great talents and abilities. Mary Catherine’s transformation skills were very noticeable. It some scenes she was almost not recognizable. She made me very interested in each scene that she was in. I would gladly go to another production that includes
...transition between each stage was flawless. I enjoyed that screens were used to create the background for each scene allowing for the smooth transitions. The screens gave the appearance of being three-dimensional making the scenes seem much more real. I also enjoyed the lighting being used as spotlights during some of the scenes and being used as a transition between scenes, or day and evening.
Overall there was a strong script with excellent actors. The performance was very funny. There was a well designed set and costumes. The performance I saw influenced my opinions on theatre in general, in a positive way. I will definitely consider using theatre for my future entertainment(closing paragraphs are hard).
Through December 5th through the 7th, I performed in Thornton Wilder’s play of Our Town. The only sets or props that the actors or actresses used where folding chairs for us to sit in, umbrellas to hide Emily (Julie Dumbler), and flats on both sides of the stage to hide the people behind them. The reason for the lack of set is so the audience can use there imagination of what the town of Grover’s Corner, New Hampshire looks like. All the rest of the props that the actors had to use were pan mimed and acted out to the fullest to make it look real. The only other experience with no set was with Miss Henery in Neodesha and it was a disaster so I didn’t know how well this was going to work out. But with the help of our director Peter Ellenstein and the rest of the cast, the pan miming was very successful. Our performance space was a modified thrust stage. The shape of the stage served us well for this play, but the back stage was horrible. All of the chairs that we had to use were folding chairs that made a lot of noise even if you hardly touched one. One neat thing about the play is that all of the sound affects were made by our backstage manager (Lisa Mitchell) or other members of the cast. In exception for the clock chiming at the end of the play. People who have seen the play tell me that it is a very heart moving play. I did not get that feeling because I was always backstage or onstage. Ether way I didn’t get to watch the play so I couldn’t see what was so moving about it. The only humor I got was from lines and the funniest person I heard was Professor Willard (Gary Mitchell). The audience is led through the entire play by the Stage Manager (Cory Venable). He literally talks to the audience between every scene explaining what is going on in the story. I thought Mr. Wilder did a good job in having a Stage Manager do this. The Stage Manager tells and shows us a story a young girl growing up and facing death, even after death. He show us how Emily Webb (Julie Dumbler) first gets to know her future husband George Gibbs (Eric Cole).
First impression of the play when I first walked in was one of confusion. The stage design was not distinguishable. I could not tell what was going on or what it was supposed to be. One thing I could
...the audience and parents that tragedy that could come to them. I think it is not only a lesson for teenagers, but a lesson for parents as well. Time, effort, and energy put into this play were definitely worthwhile, in my opinion. I believe all their practice, rehearsal, and hard work paid off.
The characters were very funny and were developed well over the musical. The costumes were excellent for the musical and were not only well made but fit the musical perfectly. One costume that stood out to me was Jesus’s costume, which was a simple white robe but had a cross like pattern of lights on his body. The Mormons were also dressed in the stereotypical Mormon missionary outfit with the pants and the tie. The set was very well made and I really like the interactions the people had with the village set. However, the best aspect of the show was the music. Each song not only contributed to the development of the story excellently, but also had the audience laughing at every song. The pit orchestra (the heroes of every musical) had many very talented musicians and contributed significantly to the musical.
Theater is acting, and each actor that was involved in this production was fantastic. Page Ogle who played Dolly did a very good job being a sweet talking, yet manipulative woman in the 1890s. I would have critiqued her on just one thing, slow down!
It was good setting to get the attention from the audience and also a way to move around or change settings of the play. Although I love this play my small critic for this play was the players. Some others actors had understandable accents but others didn’t. For example, the brother of the servant his accent was confusing because he kept switching his accent from different country languages. This play was really nice it had a little of bit of everything drama, comedy, romance, betrayal. What like about this play it was how they used the dramatic structure the inciting incident and the climax. The inciting incident for this play of musical comedy murders of 1940 was guessing who the killer of the play was because there was tension building up not knowing who the murder was. The climax for this play would be for me finding out who was the murder and just being in shock how everything had change into a new scenario. I went to see A Disappearing Number at the theater, performed by Complicite and directed by Simon McBurney. The production successfully blended maths and romance, and incorporated the past and present together. The scene changes were the most successful aspect of the performance, particularly the rotation of the blackboard center stage, which allowed actors to enter and exit the stage. Although it didn't fit at first, it became effective as the play progressed and the acting style became more non-naturalistic. Screens were also used to alternate between scenes of Ramanujan in India and G.H Hardy in Cambridge.
The show was natural because all the cast understands their roles well. They have a great voice. All the songs sound great. Monica, Nathan, and Kimberly voices were just unbelievable. It makes the audience sink into the play more and more. The show flows well and the director has done a great job. She gives the actors/actresses to use their own way to portray the characters other than just telling them what do to. Something that can do better is the dancing. In the play, the dance was off because there are so many dancers it understandable that they don’t have the same pace. It would be great that they dance at the same pace. For example, during the ball, there is one couple who dance faster than the rest but at the end they still catch up with each other. It was nice when actors and crew move the set in the dark. Some crew wears black so they are see less visible. It is a great idea when the directors did that. Something that the play did well was the set, the dresses, the jokes, songs and many other
