In the story Thank you M’am by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones treats the boy pretty good because she wanted to take him home to clean his face up after he tried to steal instead of taking him to jail so I think she was pretty nice to the boy. In paragraph 26 the author writes, “let the water run until it gets warm.” This quote supports the claim because she let the boy into her house to use the sink. I don’t think any other person would let a person that just tried to steal their pocketbook. So this means she was pretty nice to Roger. Another piece of evidence is in paragraph 44 the author writes, “when they were eating she got up and said, “Now, here take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes.” This quote supports the claim
The Negro Speaks of Rivers and Mother to Son, explained the importance of the woman, light and darkness and strength in the African-American community. Hughes made a very clear and concise statement in focusing on women and the power they hold, light and darkness, and strength. Did his poems properly display the feelings of African-American’s in that time period? It is apparent that Hughes felt a sense of pride in his culture and what they had to endure. After all “Life ain’t been no crystal stair!”(Norton, Line 2, 2028)
Mrs. May is a character in this short story that really should not have received much blame. She had lost her husband and still raised her two sons, but they did not show her much respect, nor did they make much if any attempt to maintain their farm despite being educated. However, she was able to get through this, but the issue is her worker’s family. A family that to her should not have been nearly as wealthy or successful as her own, much less actually be better in any way. She secretly envied the Greenleafs’ sons, but she would never dare admit such a thing. They served in the military and were honored, got married, and even now helped their parents with their duties. This is in stark dissimilarity to her own sons, one of which had these feelings about the matter: “He hated the country and he hated the life he lived; he hated living with his mother and his idiot brother and he hated hearing about the damn dairy and the damn help and the damn broken machinery.” Furthermore they do not respect their mother’s contributions or really care much for her, evident by their last words with her. They did not share the same level of regard for the values that Mrs. May held so close to. As for her, she was much too proud to think that her sons could be failures, and refused to accept the facts of her own life, and that really was her downfall; the bull just finished the
Prejudice is a cancer that spreads hate among its perpetrators and victims alike. In 1930 Langston Hughes penned the novel, Not Without Laughter. This powerful story, written from the perspective of an African-American boy named James “Sandy” Rodgers, begins in the early 1900’s in the small town of Stanton, Kansas. Through the eyes of young Sandy, we see the devastating impact of racism on his family and those they are close to. We also see how the generations of abuse by whites caused a divide within the black community. Among, and even within, black families there were several social classes that seemed to hinge on seeking equality through gaining the approval of whites. The class someone belonged to was determined by the color of their skin, the type of church one attended, their level of education, and where an individual was able to find work.
An identity crisis is defined as a period, at which an individual struggles with one's own sense of self. I believe that everyone goes through such a crisis at one point or another; however, I do not feel it is correct to say, everyone goes through this type of crisis entering their first year of college. Now, I am not say that someone can’t have an identity crisis entering college for the first time, for is was made clear in the essay, that some people can indeed, have a sudden realization of either finding or losing one’s self in college. In turn, it is fair to say that most people do develop a sort of crisis when embarking in the college life. Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes wrote the poem “Ballad of the Landlord” in 1940, a time of immense discrimination against people of African descent. The poem details an account of a tenant, later found out to be an African American, who is dissatisfied with his rental property. The tenant is politely asking the landlord to make the needed repairs on the realty, but instead the landlord demands to be paid. The tenant refuses to pay the rent, and the police are called after a threat is made towards the landlord. The police arrest the tenant; he is jailed for ninety days with no bail. Langston Hughes’s “Ballad of the Landlord” is a startling poem that underlines the discrimination African Americans had to cope with in the nineteen-forties by illustrating an account of an African American tenant’s troubles with a Caucasian landlord through the use of theme, dialect, tone and multiple speakers.

The short story by Langston Hughes “Thank You Ma'am,” takes place in a community that isn’t the greatest. Roger, a young man, wants new shoes, but he doesn’t have the money nor parents looking after him. Roger resorts to stealing to get the shoes. The women he tried to steal from caught him, but she came from a similar place in the past. The women, Mrs. Jones, feeling empathy took care of the boy, and paid for the shoes. One lesson this story implies is to put yourself in others people's shoes before judging or acting.
Everyone feels sympathetic or compassionate for another sometime in their life. It’s compassion for another person that provides us hope for our own life. In the short story Thank You ma'am By Langston Hughes, the author uses dialogue, inner thinking, and character motivation to show Roger’s reasoning for trying to steal the pocketbook. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones feels sympathy for Roger because she understands what it's like to be a kid, to crave something, especially if you can’t have it. In the story, Roger wanted so badly to own a pair of blue suede shoes, that he tried to commit a crime to do so. Ultimately, even though the woman feels anger towards Roger for trying to steal the pocketbook, she mostly feels compassionate because she understands.
