In today’s generation, text messages have a big impact on young people, in a good and bad ways. I am really interesting in this topic because it is something that concerns us in our society. I want to know and learn how text message applies on young literacy. Since technologies are being used everyday, it has change the way young people view the world. Especially the teenagers, they have use text message in another level. For instance, if I walk around the school and asking random people if they use text message to communicate their friends or family, I guarantee 90 percent of the students would say “yes”. As far as my research, I finding that text messaging affect teen’s literacy in so many ways. More pacifically, it affects their literacy by not knowing how to correctly punctuate their words, grammar, speaking, school and even finding a job. Teens text like for example "ttly" "gtg" "wyd" etc. they find an easy way of texting rather than using the correct way. Farther more, in the research that was made they found that teens send about 1800 text messages per month that that is not accurate because text messages have increased. Another question that relevance to me is what are the negatives and positives effects of text messaging on teens/students. Similar to Texting while driving is a serious issue that is causing accidents and deaths, it also applies to the same issues that texting has created are cheating during tests, distractions and disruptions during class time. “These technologies give teens access to their friends 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is not surprising that texting and related technologies have become so popular” (Loftis, Tech Learning website). The over use of texting is determining the way teens/students write formally in the classroom, which cause caused students to forms their own style of writing. However, not all aspects of texting are negative. For instance, Parents can use text messaging to keep in touch with their child or if their child needs a ride home.
