“Terry Wane!” choked the first guest. “You’re Terry Wane, sole heir of the Wane Corporation. You made your first billion before you turned sixteen without your families help. And… Did you say Lamina is your… You’re engaged to marry… But, she’s a… Mr. Wane, I don’t know what kind of lies Lamina Farmer has told you, but she isn’t who she says she is.” “One moment!” Madelyn said strongly, with a vicious snap in her voice. “But, Mrs. Corbin, you don’t understand. Lamina Farmer is…” “I would hold your tongue,” said Horus slowly, with a bit of anger appearing in his voice. “You forget where you are and who you are addressing. I think it would be in your own best self-interest if you would shut the hell up!” “Yes Mr. Corbin,” …show more content…
Corbin,” growled Lamina, under her breath. “You’re a real bitch you know that?” “Trust me, Lamina,” she chuckled, “you have only seen the good side of me. So, what shall it be?” “Mrs. Corbin,” she said softly and subservient, with her eyes cased downward, “I beg of you to please forgive me and let me serve you as you wish. Now that we got that shit over with, let’s castrate the no balls bastard and get me married so I can finally… Well, you know. It was the only promise I made to my mother when she found out that I was working as a stripper to pay my way through college. As you might know, I’m no longer in college and unfortunately still single.” “Castrate the bastard you say,” giggled Madelyn. “Oh, I like that. Now that we have an understanding, call me Madelyn. Trust me, less than a handful of people has right to do so. When you attend social gatherings with Terry it will have people kissing your backside for hours unending. And before you ask, not even your husband has the right, so don’t give it to him. Now let’s go have some fun castrating the bastard.” “Madelyn,” called Lamina abruptly, as if she had just remembered something important, “I do have one question.” “What is …show more content…
Terry’s parents learn I want someone to marry a friend and they jumped at the chance. I couldn’t hide the fact to them about you stripping to pay for college, but after his mother had another doctor assist in your last gynecologist visit, she no longer had complaint. The good looking dark haired doctor in the room wasn’t a consort as your doctor told you. That doctor was her brother, Terry’s uncle. Terry’s grandparents own several hospitals and that just happened to be one of them. That did save me from buying it. I do have something you should know before you fellowship with Terry’s mother.” “Should I already know the answer to that?” Lamina asked cautiously, as she folded her arms in front of her. “Don’t be ridiculous, of course you do,” she snickered. “I couldn’t resist, but to see her reaction when I played some of your performances. Not to worry. Only his mother saw the DVDs and especially the breakup between you and that fool over there. At least the woman no longer has concerns about grandchildren with you around. Those were her words, not mine. What you really should know is that Terry’s engagement was
The speaker's relationship with her husband had to go over a few changes. At first, she did not want anything to do with her husband, she was still fourteen years old consequently feeling unready on handling such a big responsibility, but she had no other choice but to stay with him as she was a part of an arranged marriage. Later on, the speaker accepts her relationship with her husband and
This quote centers Henrietta Lacks’ story around the same questions that have driven the Doctoring course: What does it mean to care for others? And how do we ensure that we care for our patients first as people, rather than as a disease? In many ways, Henrietta Lacks’ story is a textbook case in how not to be a good physician. In examining and learning from her story through the lens of Doctoring, we can inform our own practice and
These two girls both lack something in their lives that are critical Joy doesn’t have a leg and her health is declining overall and Dee doesn’t have knowledge of her history. Joy lost her leg at a young age from a shooting accident but she does have a prosthetic. The prosthetic leg doesn’t deter her from being this outspoken rude person who loves to talk down on her family. She makes other always feel bad because she though that her education entitled her to have a higher status. Joy learns the hard way that people aren’t always what you expect them to be, Manley Pointer. Pointer was a bible salesman. Joy though she could use that to her benefit along with the fact that Manley seemed to be interested in Joy because he was complimenting her consistently when he visited her. She thought that things would be fine and until she got to the barn with Manley. The two sat in the barn and conversed for a while and then he decided to try and get her to confess her love. The conversation between the two went completely left. Joy decide to tell Manley that she was 30 years old instead of 17 like she originally said and with this opportunity Manley continued on with trying to get them to confess her love. Walker wrote, “The boy’s look was irritated but dogged. “I don’t care,” he said. “I don’t care a thing about what all you done. I just want to know if you love me or don’tcher?” and he caught her to
This internal conflict is a result of the mistakes a physician makes, and the ability to move on from it is regarded as almost unreachable. For example, in the essay, “When Doctors Make Mistakes”, Gawande is standing over his patient Louise Williams, viewing her “lips blue, her throat swollen, bloody, and suddenly closed passage” (73). The imagery of the patient’s lifeless body gives a larger meaning to the doctor’s daily preoccupations. Gawande’s use of morbid language helps the reader identify that death is, unfortunately, a facet of a physician’s career. However, Gawande does not leave the reader to ponder of what emotions went through him after witnessing the loss of his patient. He writes, “Perhaps a backup suction device should always be at hand, and better light more easily available. Perhaps the institutions could have trained me better for such crises” (“When Doctors Make Mistakes” 73). The repetition of “perhaps” only epitomizes the inability to move on from making a mistake. However, this repetitive language also demonstrates the ends a doctor will meet to save a patient’s life (73). Therefore, it is not the doctor, but medicine itself that can be seen as the gateway from life to death or vice versa. Although the limitations of medicine can allow for the death of a patient to occur, a doctor will still experience emotional turmoil after losing someone he was trying to
It seems as if Terry’s physiological and safety needs were not consistently met as a child, which may have led to her developing an insecure attachment with her parents. Moreover, her mother seems to be using Terry as a scapegoat to avoid confronting her own problems with her marriage. Her father’s possible depression, issues with drinking, and her mother’s inability to provide emotional security to Terry seem to be contributing to the depression and anxiety she is feeling. Also, it is possible that Terry may have acquired depression from her father. Terry would need an intervention across multiple systems to properly address her depression and
“Mother what is happening?” I asked her as I looked at the crowd gathering. There were three women in shackles walking.
The woman turned, still smiling, until she caught sight of his suit. Her happy visage fade. She flipped a curl out of her face. "So would I, honey."
“Of course I knew what they were referring to, but I wasn’t even vaguely engaged. The fact that gossip had published the banns was one of the reasons I had come East. You can’t stop going with an old friend on account of rumors, and on the o...
Perhaps the greatest problem faced throughout this tale was that of miscommunication. The Merced Community Medical Center or MCMC for short was the place where Lia was being treated. This hospital was the Merced county's only hospital and unlike most rural county hospital it is state of the art, ."..42,000-square foot wing ... that houses coronary care, intensive care, and transitional care units; 154 medical and surgical beds...."3 This was a teaching hospital made up of interns mostly, but also with some great doctors like Peggy Philp and Neil Ernst. Peggy and Neil are married and have children. They graduated together at the top of their class, and have created quite a practice for themselves. Although MCMC is a great rural hospital, it also has the same problems as most rural hospitals do which is the health care crunch, where most of the money goes to the urban hospitals and then the leftover money is spread among th...
"You like it, eh?" Her father bestowed on her his secret smile. In truth it was more of a smirk. Right lip raised slightly to expose an endearing dimple beneath his moustache, his cupid's bow lips pursed so it looked like he was pouting. "I forget you are fierce, like she was."
As the story begins, the unnamed doctor is introduced as one who appears to be strictly professional. “Aas often, in such cases, they weren’t telling me more than they had to, it was up to me to tell them; that’s why they were spending three dollars on me.” (par. 3) The doctor leaves the first impression that he is one that keeps his attention about the job and nothing out of the ordinary besides stating his impressions on the mother, father and the patient, Mathilda. Though he does manage to note that Mathilda has a fever. The doctor takes what he considers a “trial shot” and “point of departure” by inquiring what he suspects is a sore throat (par. 6). This point in the story, nothing remains out of the ordinary or questionable about the doctor’s methods, until the story further develops.

Passing the waiting room on his way out of the hospital entrance, a woman calls his name. He turns to her and tries to recall if he knows her, but he has no recollection of her. "I know who you are. I know what's happening." A million questions come to his mind. "Not here," she explains. "We must go somewhere private." She leads him to her car and tells him to get in. He follows the command and slides into the passenger seat. "Please...
