Preventing termites is likely a number one concern for homeowners. Termites are small but they are capable of costing homeowners billions of dollars each year statistics reveal. A termite infestation happens in every corner of the US, but mainly in homes where people use artificial heating.

On an average, there could be up to 14 termite colonies for each acre of land. With this said, it's possible a dwelling could have an average of four colonies under the property or at least around the home. We're talking an approximation of a million subterranean termites in one colony alone.

How To Determine if You Have Termites

Termites find nourishment in the cellulose they eat. The cellulose they crave is in wood products or in the actual timber like trees stumps. You probably won't see termites digging their way up from the ground, but if you take a look around your home, you may notice a few traces of their existence.

Probe for hollow spots around the wood structures using a (flathead) screwdriver or something similar to it. You may even spot a swarm of termites around the construction of the home. The EPA teaches us you can judge the kind of termites by the damage or fecal matter they leave behind.
