Terminator and I, Robot both reveal a dark story about the influence of artificial intelligence on American culture, how futuristic technological advances can possibly annihilate mankind, and how artificial intelligence can endanger our sense of safety. In today's world advances in technology also threaten privacy. These ideas will be discussed and expanded upon. The most important issue addressed in the 1984 classic, Terminator, is that somewhere in the near future human beings delve into artificial intelligence and suffer the dire consequences. The film focuses on 3 main characters. The antagonist is a nearly indestructible human like robot that was sent from the year 2029 to 1984 to eliminate a woman who has a significant role in the future of mankind. The first protagonist is a man named Kyle Reese, who is a soldier sent from the year 2029 to 1984 to protect the woman that the cyborg is trying to assassinate. The second protagonist is a woman named Sarah Connor who is to be the future mother of a man who will lead the fight in the resistance against the artificial intelligence known as Skynet. This movie truly showcases how the furtherment of artificial intelligence can threaten the safety of humanity. This movie brings the prospect of artificial intelligence into question. When it comes to the development of this advanced intelligence Jerry Kaplan had this to say, "The dominant public narrative about artificial intelligence is that we are building increasingly intelligent machines that will ultimately surpass human capabilities, steal our jobs, possibly even escape human control and kill us all." I believe mankind would not respond well to the notion of a robot/machine that possesses awareness. When it comes to reacting to advancements in robotics Liang had this to say, "People vary in the extent to which they report fear toward robots, especially when they perceive that the robot is autonomous or has artificial intelligence." (Liang 1) This is most likely because we as human beings have been molded by popular media to assume that artificial would be an absolute threat to our well being. When it comes to how the common person would react to the development of artificial intelligence Brooks had this to say, "Paranoia is a common reaction of human intelligence to artificial intelligence. We are both thrilled and disturbed by the prospect of machines that can respond to us as a human would -- and at some level even seem to be human. Certainly there is no lack of dire warnings of AI's dangers. It is watching us, destroying our privacy and perverting our public discourse. It's out to steal our jobs - and may ultimately destroy humanity itself." (Brooks 1) It's no doubt that a humanity will be excited about finally achieving true artificial intelligence.
