In today 's modern time, not many people exercise. Most of the youth of today are overweight or obese. Teresa Anne Power wrote an article in the USA Today called "Could Yoga be the answer?”. The author of this article is wanting to get the attention of today 's youth and parents as well. Her goal is to get people to "get up and move", to be active and make healthier lifestyle choices. She uses a combination of logos and pathos to help express her opinion. This is a great way for us as America 's youth to get in better shape and stay healthier! Saying “"Childhood obesity is common, serious, and costly."’ as the headliner. It then continues to give examples of what can and probably will happen to children who are obese. These examples include stress, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a lot of money lost paying for medication for the previous examples and a shorter life expectancy. It then goes on to explain a way to get rid and help obesity ( yoga). Stating that “"Yoga can be a gentle method for your child to get more physical activity and enhance his or her well-being." Furthermore, anecdotal reports suggest that yoga can calm children, reduce obesity, and enhance concentration.” (page 2). Anne Power concludes that obesity can be helped in a simple yet effective way. “Obesity is not a problem that can be resolved overnight or even in a few weeks. However, a daily commitment to practicing simple yoga poses offers an ideal way for safe and long-term weight-loss success. Yoga for kids is one way we can fight childhood obesity at a national level and ensure the future health of our youth.” (page 4). There and strengths and weaknesses to this article. Yoga can help prevent obesity if done daily. You must continue this each day and increase the difficulty level when needed. Providing examples and reasons as to why yoga could help today’s children overcome childhood obesity. Power uses a combination of logos- logical, and pathos- emotions to persuade us and express her opinions. “BECAUSE of the increasing rates of obesity, unhealthy eating habits, and physical inactivity, we may see the first generation that will be less healthy and have a shorter life expectancy than their parents” is one of the few examples of pathos being used. Power uses this statement to get us to worry about our health and make us want to get healthier. “According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, children should participate in physical activity for at least 60 minutes every day. Practicing yoga is one way they can meet this guideline while unwinding naturally. Yoga helps kids take stress in stride. Children who focus on nasal breathing feel calmer and less anxious before taking tests. This type of breathing gets more oxygen into the lungs and reduces stress, as opposed to mouth breathing, which can lead to hyperventilation and cause or worsen symptoms of high blood pressure.” (page 3). Using logical reasoning is a very effective way to convince someone of something. Power using logos makes the readers see the concept in a different light and understand better the effects obesity can/ will have.
