Tennis is a sport that most people don’t normally think about on a daily basis. The first thing that comes to mind is that it’s a boring sport for those in a higher class or somewhere off in the depths of France or Britain. Even so, the history of tennis is something that is quite interesting and the games involved can be profound. How did the sport of tennis come to be? Are there any variations of the sport? How has the equipment changed throughout the years? Why is tennis still around today? All of these have piqued interest at some point with a great amount of people, with the latter being the most interested question. The tennis seen as typical tennis today wasn’t truly how tennis began. The variation that everyone knows is known as lawn tennis, while the original variation is known as “jue de paume,” which means “game of the hand.” There is not a bit of information that helps prove the actual date of creation for the game, although it is sometime past the year 1000 AD as well as having a high potential of being created in France. Later on, racquets came into play and this beca...
One man, a musician by the name of Buddy Walker, saw Althea play one day and had a revolation. He figured that if Althea was so good at table tennis, then she would excel in regular tennis as well. At the time, no one realized just how beneficial this idea would be for the young Harlem girl, Althea Gibson. Through donations raised to pay for her membership and lessons, Althea became a member of an African American club called the Harlem Cosmopolitian Tennis Club. It was here that she aquired the skills needed to compete in tennis matches at a higher, more competative level.
The innovations in the material of the tennis racquet — the strings and the frame — have changed tennis throughout the years; thus, fundamentally changing the game by allowing players to hit with more power, spin, and racquet speed. Many star professional tennis players in the past and present use new technology to help take their game to new levels. The change from a wooden racquet to a carbon-fiber tennis racquet and the change from cow gut strings to non-gut synthetic strings have changed the way tennis is played.
It is said that in 1949, Sobek and a partner began playing with a paddle and combined the rules of handball and squash to play what they called “paddle racquets.” He then decided to change from a paddle to a racquet itself using a tennis racquet as a model. He made 25 to sell to his friends to start the sport. There was one problem though; there were faults in the ball. Sobek then found a Spalding ball made for children that work well. He bought a lot of them and sold him to his friends in 1950 to keep his sport from dwindling out. Sobek eventually started his own company to make his own ball to his exact specifications for the game.
The obstacle I had to confront a problem my freshman year in high school. I entered into orchestra class to learn the basics of playing violin. I use to play before, but I forgot how it was played. Our teacher gave us a book to read called the “The Inner Game of Tennis.” Told us to look through it and find the deeper mean towards the book. I found it interesting that he gave us a book of tennis theme. The thing we should focus on is the position of our finger patterns and note names.
Knowing that there are so many different types of tennis racquets to choose from, one must look at the specifics of each type of racquet. Throughout the years there has been three different types of racquets. The three different types of racquets are, wooden, fiberglass, and metal (“Selecting the Right”, 2013). The first type of racquet that was used was the wooden racquet. Up until the 1970’s people used wooden racquets (“Selecting the Right”, 2013). The second type of racquets used was the metal racquets. The first metal racquets used in a match was a Prince aluminum racquet in 1976 (“Selecting the Right”, 2013). The racquet mostly used in today’s world would be fiberglass racquets which can hold up to 140mph of brutal impact (“Selecting the Right”, 2013). Power is directly related to the head size of racquets (“Selecting the Right”, 2013). A larger head will provide more power than a smaller head, because the lar...

The United States Tennis Association or USTA has been around since 1881. Originally the USTA was known as the United States National Lawn Tennis Association. The group was started by a minor cluster of people in New York City. The present USTA is an organization with more than seven hundred thousand members. It invests one hundred percent of its proceeds to promote and develop the growth of tennis, from the novice to the professional levels. There are many people who have trained with this organization and became great successes. An example of this is the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, or the Brian brothers, Bob and Mike.” In 1916, National Junior and National Boys’ Championships were added and Girls’ Championships were instituted in 1917. A year later juniors, boys and girls, were ranked for the first time. It was ten years later that the Junior Development Program was instituted.”(USTA) The USTA has developed young athletes by starting them young, identifying their talent by “Talent ID”, entering competition to produce skills, and encouraging the parents to support their children.

The way Morgan incorporated tennis into his game is by using a similar net; however, he raised the height to six feet and six inches off the ground. He also created this game for his fellow businessman Blain. When Morgan invented his game he came up with a set of rules, however many of his rules have been changed or there are new ones. One of the rules to this game is that before the game starts, there is a coin toss. This coin toss determines which team gets to decide who gets the serve first.

Tennis is a sport that many people love to play. It is not the hardest sport in the world to learn. When playing against someone, it is called a match. Tennis can be played one on one or a doubles match. The main object of the game is to hit the ball over the net, inside of the lines so that the opponent can't get to it. There are two lines about two feet parallel to each other that outline the court. In a singles match, the inner line is the out of bound line, while the outer line is out of bounds in a doubles match. If you want to play, take a look at my two favorite tennis players because they are masters at serving and scoring, a few key aspects of the game.

I 'm going to compare tennis to golf to reveal the similarities and differences between the two sports. I think you will be surprised how similar they are. They both depend on the swing of your body; grips of your hands, the strike zone of the ball and both are a mental game. Tennis and golf are also very different in many ways. The types of balls used to play the game, materials used to make the balls and equipment used to hit the balls. Tennis is a team sport and an individual sport. But golf is primarily a single player against the golf course. The exertion level differs by sport. Both sports are challenged by weather and attire.
