The Ten Commandments and Their Impact on the United States Today In a country where Christianity is the prevailing religion, it is demoralizing to know that Americans are more familiar with the ingredients of the McDonald’s Big Mac than of the most important biblical principals ever written. The Ten Commandments are much more than a few biblical guidelines; they are the basis of our nation’s legal system. Our Founding Fathers went out of their way, time and time again, to acknowledge God four times in the Declaration of Independence, and yet people of this day and age believe that Christ’s words simply do not apply anymore. The Ten Commandments have not only made a lasting impact on the Christian faith, but also lay as the foundation for the legal system we all follow as a nation. Christianity is a religion based off of the teachings of Jesus Christ, known as the Son of God and “the Anointed One”. It teaches us that there is and continues to be but one divine God of our universe who died on the cross for our sins. We all, as human beings, live in a broken world where only he can save us. Through a combination of reading passages of the Bible, a collection of Christian scriptures, prayer, and worship one can reach salvation and live with him in the everlasting kingdom of heaven. Christianity is based on having a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, our savior. Inscribed on two stone tablets, The Ten Commandments, otherwise known as the Decalogue, are many things. There are multiple interpretations of them, but whether they are rules, instructions, or principles the Ten Commandments will always be the core of God’s law. God met Moses on top of Mount Sinai to deliver what would be one of the most important “documents” of all... ... middle of paper ... ...re because they are inevitably influencing everyone around us and the way in which society will move. Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, etc., the Ten Commandments are currently a part of everyday life and are influencing everyone living in the United Sates of America regardless of religion. It isn’t a matter of what religion or God you believe in, it is a matter of knowing these signposts are entirely a part of ones life. They measure or “gauge” the way our society is turning towards and how we are as people spiritually, ethically, morally, and all of above. The Decalogue is one of the most extraordinary guides to life can really change our perspective and world. No one is perfect, but even trying to follow these ten principals can and will steer one in the right direction. What started as a few biblical guidelines truly made an impact on an entire nation.
The Ten Commandments are the first ten of the six hundred and thirteen commandments given by God to the Jewish people. The Ten Commandments built a foundation for Jewish ethics, behavior, and responsibility, which are still followed in numerous religions to this day. The Ten Commandments
...at disservice when they become secondary to a political agenda. By so denigrating the Ten Commandments, the Christian Right not only defiles what is most holy about them but also effectively throws sand in the face of the public, obscuring the very real consequences of displaying them in public schools.
The spreading of belief allows the prophet to gain followers and eventually establish traditions which surround religion, whether it be holidays, ceremonies, or even the manner of death in some extreme cases. Based off the traditions established by these religions, societies soon formed and grew while strictly following the word of god, which, in modern days, has been collected into a single collective book. Three books exist between the religions. The Torah for Judaism, the Bible for Christianity, and the Qur’an for Islam. These books detail a certain creed or code through the use of anecdotes and parables, but are generally boiled down to a list which can vary in size from Christianity’s Ten Commandments to Judaism’s 613 laws, regardless of the rhetoric displayed in the enormous amount of pages written throughout the three texts. These laws are generally simplistic and followable without much thought, unless of course if one is a philosopher, in which case there is always room for questioning. However, Judaism in particular, having 613 separate laws, becomes very specific in their laws which range from what to eat when all the way up to what kind of punishment a man should receive if he has been caught committing a crime. Some of the harsher laws have been repealed or amended, but ascetic courts still exist in closed Jewish society, with some places still following Jewish law to a T (however this practice is rare outside of middle eastern communities where Judaism rules.) And since the topic of Judaism is fresh on the mind, it shall be the first detailed separately from the others.
Christianity is one of the largest religions in the world. Christians are found in almost every corner of the earth. The religion has various traditions, beliefs, and restrictions. Christians believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ whom they take to be the Son of God. They are guided by teachings contained in the Bible. According to the scriptures, the Jesus Christ was sent to earth by God to help redeem mankind from its sin. He was crucified so that all those who believe in him are saved. The adherents of the religion believe that he will return to earth a second time when it is time to pass judgment on mankind. There are various holidays that are observed by the religion such as lent, Easter, Christmas, and

The commandments of the Torah provide Jewish adherents with ethical and moral teachings of Judaism. The commandments of the Torah contain: the 613 Mitzvot, Ten Commandments, Oral Torah and the Covenant. The 613 Mitzvot provides the widest administration of Jewish ethical principles, which are regarded as the basis of Jewish ethics. The Ten Commandments are a summary of the 613 Mitzvot. The first five commandments discuss the relationship between God and Jewish people, whereas the next five com...
In Judaism, God is seen as having a contractual relationship with the Jewish people where they must obey his holy laws in return for their status of the chosen people. God rewards or punishes Jewish people based on whether they obey or disobey his will. In parts of the Old Testament, however, God does show mercy or forgiveness, and in later interpretations God’s laws such as the Ten Commandments are followed not only out of loyalty to God but also because of their high moral character.
Before watching Dennis Prager's reflection on the Ten Commandments, I believed, like many of my peers, that the third commandment forbids using God's name for no good reason; after watching, Prager showed me that the common translation "take" was incorrect and that the Hebrew original text used the word "carry". I realized, with Mr. Prager's help, that saying God's name for no good reason was not what the commandment forbids. Instead, it was committing evil in God's name. Dennis Prager explained that religious evil is not only evil, but it does harm to the name of God.
The ten commandments originated from God to Moses it was given around 1513 BC; where god stated a set of duties and responsibilities for the people in order them to go to heaven. Moses was to deliver these commandments to the people of Egypt which would lead them to the path of righteousness. Some of these rules stated that the people of God should only praised to him and only him and not other Gods and to not kill or commit any other fouls that would disgrace them as individuals. On the other hand, the ten codes of Hammurabi originated from the Hammurabi King which was inscribed on stone. It was inscribed around 1750 BC. for the purpose of describing the time Hammurabi first became king, and to state the laws in which corresponded to human problems. It described almost everything including: marriage to family relations; protection for women and kids; poverty; protection of property and many more in which the people were influenced to follow in order to do good in society. Both the Code of Hammurabi and the Ten Commandments were set of rules given to the people of their land to foll...
It is seen through various movies that the ten commandments have a vital role in the development of their plot, action, and related matter thereof. The commandments, however, differ in severity from an inconsequential tidbit to the entire premise and scheme of the movie. From what was gathered, movies which have a commandment broken usually centralize the commandment as a main element in the movie or a major detail. For example, the entire movie of “Liar Liar” focuses on the breaking of the eighth commandment. On the other hand, movies which have a commandment followed usually treat it as a minor aspect of the movie; this can be seen in the “Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” as whether or not Gollum was spared was irrelevant to the plot. The reasoning
Their unfaithfulness led to enslavement in Egypt for approximately four hundred years. When the Lord finally freed his people through Moses, He established a second covenant. This new covenant bound the twelve tribes of Israel into one community under a set of commandments by which the people would model their lives. The Ten Commandments serve to protect the Hebrew community. The first commandment, “You shall have no other gods before me,” must come first because it reestablishes the foundation that God defines right and wrong. The second, third and fourth commandments aim to prevent divisive values from forming in the community. Commandments five through nine focus on specific actions and the timing of their consequences. For example, killing has immediate consequences, whereas adultery has future implications. The Israelites separate themselves from other civilizations with the final commandment. God commands the Hebrews to control their thoughts, so that their thoughts may not lead to sinful actions. The Ten Commandments were not concerned with granting justice among the people, but firmly established the first principles of one of the longest lasting cultures in human

One specific rule that stands out to me in our legal regulations and in the Ten Commandments is that we shall not commit murder, but what we legalize and believe in is different from what our actions do and how we define and apply this rule. According to Introduction to Animal Rights: Your Child or the Dog?, it indicates that not even animals are fully protected by God’s divine law, but are put here on earth to serve mankind. Although the words of God says that animals can be used as resources, God says humans may not waste or spoil an animal for no reason at all (Francione, 2007, p. 52). Currently we still evidence of thousands of animals being abused throughout the process of transferring them to slaughter houses, being killed in an inhumane manner, and witnessing
The Ten Commandments, Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Virtues, and the Attitudes are the sets of laws that people base their lives around in becoming good Christians. Each set of the laws affect a Christian individual, more than any other because of the laws are rooted to the bible and Christian beliefs. So, a Christian individuals knowingly or unknowingly bases what they do in life around these sets of law. The Ten Commandments and seven deadly sins tell an individual on what they are not supposed to do. The Seven Virtues and the attitudes tell an individual on what they must do and how they can combat the deadly sins. However, even though some of the laws are outdated they still play a role in how we act. Each set of laws has its own distinct characteristic, for example some tell people what not to do in their lives and some tell people what to do in their lives and how to live their lives.
Is the modern nation of America adhering to the first commandment of the Israelite’s covenantal relationship with God? On December 7, 1997, 96% of Americans said they believed in the words, “In God We Trust” (Schlessinger and Vogel 1). Yet, the Ten Commandments cannot be constitutionally
