Babies like to put things in their mouth and chew and bite on their toys. Teething is a process that takes place as part of a baby’s development. Babies get comfort and relief from chewing on toys, like teethers. Tender gums might feel better when light pressure is applied. Teethers can be put in the refrigerator providing a cold soothing coolness to the baby’s gums. However, it’s not always about teething. Babies put things in their mouth which encourages a baby to move their tongue inside their mouth. This also gives the baby awareness of their mouth and can lay the foundations for learning speech sounds as babies begin to babble. Teethers are made from all types of materials. An activity gym allows a baby to lie on their back and kick and touch items that are hanging in front of them. The soft mat beneath them also gives them the comfort to wriggle around. Activity gyms tend to be made from plastic and can have items such as rattles, safe mirrors and squeaky toys.

Dentists have been around as long as man can remember. Early dentist were often the doctors or the barbers in the community. Early dentistry consisted mostly of pulling teeth. Anyone with a pair of pliers could do the job. Dentistry has evolved over the years and involves much more than just pulling teeth today. General Dentistry today involves many things including: oral hygiene, filling caries (cavities), root canals, crowns, and making dentures. Some dentists specialize in areas such as orthodontics or oral surgery.

Rapidly evolving science and technology have implemented changes within dentistry as evidenced by new standards and guidelines being produced by nationally recognised associations including National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) in Scotland, in provision of new scientific evidence. The latest standards and guidelines produced, endorse everyday clinical practice through evidence based dentistry (REF). All dental professionals as part of continued professional development are expected to keep to date on relevant guidelines and knowledge related to their practice (REF). They have to use skills they were born with to gather facts and information about the environment. These skills include looking, sucking, grasping, listening and any other reflexes. Object permanence is one of the accomplishments during this stage of development. Object permanence is when an object continues to exist even if you cannot see it or hear it. As a health care professional, the dental hygienist is an important member of the dental team providing patient care. Good qualities for a dental hygienist are compassion and enjoying talking to people which are two qualities that fit my personality. I love the thought of knowing I made a positive impact in a person's health. Becoming a dental hygienist professionally requires you to obtain an associate degree in dental hygiene. They affect the average American by educating them about dental care. A dentist helps people with their dental health, which can greatly impact a person’s day-to-day life.

Growing up I heard many stories from my peers of their experiences at the dentist’s office. It is upsetting to say that most of my visits were vividly terrifying. As a child, the grinding, scratching, and high-pitched twangs of the instruments digging around in my mouth would leave my ears ringing and teeth vibrating every single time. The smell of fluoride and disinfectants permanently infected the air, sending chills through my body the minute I walked in. I quickly learned that latex posses an extremely unappetizing aftertaste. Needless to say, I was not always enthusiastic about going to the dentist’s office and getting braces did not make anything better for me.
One of the major reasons why wooden toys are so popular among kids and parents alike is because they are so quiet and safe to play with. If you ask any parent, they will all agree that raising a child is no easy business and requires lots of energy. So it really helps when they can relax without the annoying noise of the toy, their child is playing with.
