Technology in Professional Sports Professional sports have always been an industry that has be up to date with the technology that is used. Technology has always been changing rapidly, the professional sports industry has to keep up with this to be able to gain and keep fanbases and athletes. They also have to keep up with these things to be able to find the most accurate and efficient ways of being able to review calls so things can be fairly called. Technology has impacted professional sports through the use of instant replay, the level of safety and through the fan experience. (“Todd”) Instant replay has benefited the game in so many aspects. From the umpires being able to learn from the missed calls to the fans being able to see a play multiple times on TV. The hawkeye system has been used in multiple sporting events: “The hawkeye system is able to give a definite decision as to whether the ball has crossed the line or not. The relay of information is in the form of an audible beep to the central referee within a half a second” (“Sports”). This type of technology has been used in soccer, aussie rules football, rugby and cricket to name a few. In sports nowadays safety is a huge concern for the athletes, coaches and referees. Technology can make some of these sports more safe. Concussions are being brought into the light more and more now. New technology in the helmet has been developed “Concussions helmets are used now in both football and baseball” (“Improved”). Technology has also made fitting helmets more accurate “Technology has changed the way that we create the things that protect the athletes. This means that we will have more accurate ways of fitting helmets so that they will fit properly. Then in return means that they will be safer” (“Changed”). Also technology can be used to make sure that athletes are not working so hard that their heart is overworked. Technology can be used to measure athletes cardiovascular level “Technology can be used to monitor the cardiovascular level of the athlete therefore making it safer for them to participate” (“A Level”). The use of this technology can help athletes reach their target heart rate. Therefore making the workout more beneficial for the athlete.
