Technology in the classroom is a debatable discussion had by educators all over the world. The topic falls on both ends of the spectrum with educators young and old. Some feel that education needs to go back to the basics, while others feel the technology is the only way to go and it is what the future holds for students. Both of these ways of teaching are very valuable, and a middle ground needs to be established in order for the most success to happen in the classroom.
Drastic changes are being made in schools across the country. Children growing up in the world today have technology surrounding them wherever they go. Toddlers grow up knowing how to use iPhones, iPads, tablets, and many more devices better than older members of their families. These kids are entering the education world with a basic knowledge of technology.
Technology goes far above playing computer games, using “apps,” or other types of games. Students need to be shown all the ways they can have resources at their fingertips, to assist in their learning process. Education continues to change over the years and new programs and curriculums are being adopted into school systems across the country.
One of those new programs that has been adopted is “Common Core.” These new standards focus more on a condensed set of state standards for teachers to follow while teaching their students. They want the students to be more hands on, and involved in project based research that will take place in all classrooms. In order for this to happen, students are going to need access to top notch technology, and the ability to use this technology whenever needed. The world of online resources open up all types of doors for students to explore and learn about things they may never have the opportunity to see or do in their real world lives. Students can interact with professionals in the outside world, and have the ability to learn from them without physically being present at the specific location. Virtual fieldtrips can be taken to far aways places, and all students have the ability to attend without costs being involved.
Technology allows teachers to change the ways they have been presenting information for several years to students of all ages. It allows educators to provide new and exciting ways to engage the students in the learning process, and open their eyes and minds to a whole new world they never new existed.
