“Technology is changing the way that we live our lives. With the advances in technology we are enabled to complete more tasks in less time, and often times, with less effort and more productivity. But with these abilities, our interactions with other people have drastically changed (The).” Communication is the act of exchanging thoughts and ideas. Through new developments in modern technology, the social lives of adults and kids have begun to drastically change.
Technology has immensely changed from the year 2000 to 2017. In 2000 the cell phone was just a cell phone, for the sole purpose of calling. When looking at the use of telephones, email, fax machines, and voice mail in the adult population in the year 2000 they did adopt the idea of using this technology to make communication more accessible. Yet we see that with the older population they valued personal relationships with relatives and friends over using technology as a way to keep in touch (Melenhorst). Adults have been more inclined to not use technology in 2000 because of the “unfamiliarity, the fear, the lack of skills, missing background and inaccessible devices [that are] keep[ing] many adults from learning and using [the technology] (Melenhorst). Adults did not see the immediate desire to learn how to overcome the obstacles to communication technology, therefore, making communication technology in 2000 not have an effect on the social lives of adults. While there are clear benefits to having immediate access to people there are downsides. Kids now are constantly searching for immediate reactions from people. They are continually looking at other picture and updating streams to keep eyes on what others are doing. For some kids, it has become a competition with who was the best picture or who is having the most fun or who is with who. The world of technology has created a competitive atmosphere where kids are competing online through communicative apps. Kids social lives have drifted away from being personal and in person. Kids and teens have become hidden behind social media making it easier for them to say and live lives that don't exist in real life. They exist behind the technology. Helen J. Watt in 2010 wrote that communication technology is creating social isolation. Technology is negatively affecting the way kids talk and react in a face to face conversation simply because they do not engage in real conversations with family and friends they use this technology to do so. Watt believes that many contextual and nonverbal language cues may be lost, such as taking turns responding, appropriateness, relevance, and formality all due to electric communication (Watt).
