Early on in my research I realized that my question “Should technology, computers and other devices be used as a teaching tool in the classroom?” was extremely obsolete. After all, this is the twenty-first century, the computer era, the digital age. Technology is here and it is not going anywhere. Technology is now an expected part of everyday curriculum, a part of common core standards and even mandate in most schools today. Once again it wasn’t a question of whether or not technology should be used as a teaching tool in the classroom, experts in the field of education overwhelming agree that it should be used in the classroom, even as early as preschool. The question was how it should be used in the classroom as a developmentally age appropriate teaching tool. Professional educators believe that it is in the best interest of the child’s development to be introduced to technology at a very early age. Each source gives several reasons as to how technology should be used in the early childhood setting. For example, if a teacher is reading a story about a penguin to a classroom full of 3 year-olds how wonderful to bring up on the Smart-board a real penguin in its own habitat for the children to see. Each source also gives solutions as to how improvements can be made to change the misconceptions. Teachers should be properly trained as to what is available in the form of applications and programs for the age group they teach and how much time children should be allowed on devices. They should have technical support staff to help them and time allocated for curriculum
