Today’s families are a lot different from families of previous generations. In the 21st century family technology has diminished the core values that help hold a family together; communication, interaction, spending quality time, etc. Children in today’s society rely on technology for the majority of their day. It has been linked to ruining their imagination and creativity. Technology has a major effect on children particularly in the United States. The impact of rapidly advancing technology on the developing child has seen an increase of physical, psychological and behavior disorders that the health and education systems are just beginning to detect and understand (Rowan).
Technology has consumed a good portion of children’s lives in the United States. Believe it or not, but children at the age of two already have developed online history. At a mere five years of age more than fifty percent use a computer or electronic device and by the age of seven or eight they regularly play video games. In an article from the Early Childhood Education Degrees, about forty-two percent of children eight years or younger have a television in their bedroom of those children; twenty-nine percent of children also have a DVD/VCR. Eleven percent has a video game console, and four percent have a computer. It has been said that children under the age of two spend over twice as much time watching TV as they do reading books; an average of 50 minutes per day of watching TV as apposed to 20 minutes of reading. The impact of technology has also been linked dramatically to effecting children’s attention span by becoming distracted more easily and lacking critical thinking. For example, the repeated use of Internet search engines is causing children to become less accessible at remembering things and more skilled at remembering where to find things, Google has been a popular example of this.
Technology has had a dramatic impact for children in the United States. Children have had many advantages and disadvantages to these advances in society. Children have become more susceptible to diseases such as obesity and diabetes, many neurological issues. On the other hand, children have also gained a wide variety of ways to broaden their skills such as learning, reading, and more. Technology and its advancements can be viewed as a controversial issue when it comes to children in the United States.
