Humans adapt to technology, and it has shaped us into what we are today. As technology keeps on developing, we will soon find out that we are not only adapting to technology, but that the distinction between technology and humans, which is already blurred, will be erased. The distinction will disappear because humans will be replaced by something that will be indistinguishable from technology.
At the start of the course, we began by proposing different definitions of what we thought certain topics like technology, culture, and being a human were, to grasp the class’s understanding of the topics. Not the kind that has nanotechnology and circuits inside of their body, the kind that realizes that they are no longer an individual person and lives life accordingly. In You are Cyborg, they give many examples of how humans are cyborgs, one of them being, treating the human body as a machine. “It’s about Donna Haraway going to the gym, looking at a shelf of carbo-loaded bodybuilding foods, checking out the Nautilus machines, and realizing that she’s in a place that wouldn’t exist without the idea of the body as a high-performance machine” (Kunzru, 1997, p. 2). The gym is a place where people go to work on their muscles to make them stronger and train other parts of their body, like the heart through cardio exercises. This type of thinking really resonates with me because when I think of the human body at a basic level, I don’t see a difference from a machine. Much like a machine, the human body intakes energy through food, water, and sleep, and outputs energy through physical movement or thought. It is composed of many different components some of which can be replaced and/or improved, for example, some people replace their hips with metal or people who lose limbs replace them with prosthetics. A machine can intake energy and output energy through the use of a physical component or as information. The enhanced human would be neither a user of AI technology nor a member of a hybrid human-computer team. Rather, interfaced directly to their brain, sophisticated AI technology would be become a part of their mind, conferring unmediated access to its computational processes. The result would be a new sort of human being, a bio-machine hybrid species with potentially far greater intellectual capabilities than an ordinary person. The rest of society would then have to decide how to treat such people, while they in their turn, would be deciding how to treat us.
The combined AI human being will be as Shanahan puts it, a bio-machine hybrid species, meaning that it’s no longer human. Even though this hybrid species wouldn’t be a human anymore it would still have to interact with humans and our existing network. Which supports the statement previously mentioned, that a change in one person such as becoming a hybrid species will have an effect on others because we are all on a network. This is significant because as technology advances and biological limitations of the human body are surpassed it would be beneficial to change and allow these transformations, much like medicine today. The official foundations for "artificial intelligence" were set forth by A. M. Turing, in his 1950 paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" wherein he also coined the term and made predictions about the field. He claimed that by 1960, a computer would be able to formulate and prove complex mathematical theorems, write music and poetry, become world chess champion, and pass his test of artificial intelligences. In his test, a computer is required to carry on a compelling conversation with humans, fooling them into believing they are speaking with another human. All of his predictions require a computer to think and reason in the same manner as a human. Despite 50 years of effort, only the chess championship has come true. By refocusing artificial intelligence research to a more humanlike, cognitive model, the field will create machines that are truly intelligent, capable of meet Turing's goals. Currently, the only "intelligent" programs and computers are not really intelligent at all, but rather they are clever applications of different algorithms lacking expandability and versatility. The human intellect has only been used in limited ways in the artificial intelligence field, however it is the ideal model upon which to base research. Concentrating research on a more cognitive model will allow the artificial intelligence (AI) field to create more intelligent entities and ultimately, once appropriate hardware exists, a true AI.
Cyber Technology is another area where AI will contribute in future. Of all the technological developments of the modern age, none is as complex as artificial intelligence. The idea that a non-human, manufactured entity could advance to a point of emulating human behavior is enough to make people shiver. The idea of something so advanced that we will not be able to tell the difference may be even worse. In 1961 Philip Dick wrote Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. It portrayed a world with these exact characteristics. Artificial Intelligence had advanced to a point of near-perfect human replication. In creating this world, Dick was echoing the speculations and fears of a.i. that had build up by that time. It would then continue to influence those opinions in the years after.
The great philosopher Aristotle believed that humans had a fixed nature and should not be tampered with, although the 19th century philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre believed “existence precedes essence” which humans have their own freedom to choose to do what they wish. These two philosophical theories clash against one another about whether humans should alter our natural human nature and the issue of cyborgs. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary a cyborgs is defined as “a person whose body contains mechanical or electrical devices and whose abilities are greater than the abilities or normal humans. Due to the increase in technology, today we are able to create artificial chips, organs, implants and other “life-like” body parts which can greatly enhance humans’ lives. The ethical debate that we have today is whether it is morally right to artificially implant object in humans and create cyborgs.
Personally, I don't believe that true artificial intelligence can ever be reached. I believe that a computer can be so advanced that it may appear to be thinking on it's own, but only because a man programmed it to think away. I don't think that a computer can teach itself common sense and the true ability to reason between right and wrong like humans can. And since I believe this, I see no problem in expanding technology and creating online communities as Rheingold and Bruckman would.
Currently, computers can calculate and run algorithms much faster than humans, and if strong A.I. was to exist, these technological beings would be intelligently superior to human kind. Elon Musk, a world renowned technological genius, fears Silicon Valley’s rush into artificial intelligence, because he believes it poses a threat to humanity (Dowd, Maureen). Musk stated that “one reason to colonize Mars – so that we’ll have a bolt-hole if A.I. goes rogue and turns on humanity” (Dowd, Maureen). The possibility of this outcome is real because if strong A.I. was to exist, they have the potentially to surpass humans in every aspect. The main difference between A.I. and humans is that humans are conscious beings that can think for themselves. If A.I. was to develop consciousness, they would be able to do every task much more efficiently than humans. According to Stephen Hawking, “If people design computer viruses, someone will design AI that improves and replicates itself. This will be a new form of life that outperforms humans” (Sulleyman, Aatif). This world-renowned physicist believes that A.I. will begin to self-improve upon themselves through an algorithm that allows A.I. to learn. Artificial Intelligence is a term not too widely used in today’s society. With today’s technology we haven’t found a way to enable someone to leave their physical body and let their mind survive within a computer. Could it be possible? Maybe someday, but for now it’s just in theory. The novel by William Gibson, Neuromancer, has touched greatly on the idea of artificial intelligence. He describes it as a world where many things are possible. By simply logging on the computer, it opens up a world we could never comprehend. The possibilities are endless in the world of William Gibson.
Nick Bilton starts “Artificial Intelligence as a Threat” with a comparison of Ebola, Bird flu, SARS, and artificial intelligence. Noted by Bilton, humans can stop Ebola, bird flu, and SARS. However, artificial intelligence, if it ever exceeds human intelligence, would not be stoppable by humans. Bilton, in his article, argues that AI is the biggest threat to humans at our current time, more serious than Ebola and other diseases. Bilton references many books and articles which provide examples of threats of AI.
