Over-ripening of local banana varieties (Saba, Lakatan and Latundan) for domestic market is a big problem during inter-island transport in the Philippines. This can be attributed to bulk handling, inappropriate container van and high transit temperature. Rapid appraisals over two decades documented the technical innovations done by the key players in the supply chain to alleviate the problem. Commercial shipment trials from southern to northern Philippines using ethylene absorbent were also conducted to reduce ripening.
Seven major modifications in the design of non-refrigerated container van have been adopted over a span of two decades for sea transport of bananas. The improvements were focused primarily on provision for heat exhaust and supply of fresh air to the fruits. Use of ice blocks in the bulk load during sea transit proved effective and consistent in delaying ripening. Inclusion of ethylene absorbent in 15 commercial shipment trials reduced ripening by 44%, with a wide range in percentage of ripening reduction.

INTRODUCTION
Local bananas like ‘Saba’ (Musa BBB), ‘Lakatan’ (Musa AA) and ‘Latundan’ (Musa AAB) are grown mainly in the southern part of the Philippines. However, fruit demand is greatest in the northern part of the country where more than half of its total population resides (NSO 2012).

In his introduction, Soluri introduces his idea of the banana as a symbol, something that he repeats throughout the book. I believe this is one of his strongest arguments. When the outbreak of the Panama disease began the United Fruit ordered their field workers to put disinfectant on their tools and clothing in order to decrease the spread of disease. They burned the diseased plants, which took care of the infected bananas, but companies still had problems with workers transferring diseases. Spreading the disease was not intentional but it happened. This lead the United Fruit to begin research programs to fight the disease in 1923 so that it did not worsen. The US department of agriculture had argued the cultivation a disease resistan species would have a higher success rate, for example, the “Chinese banana.” This fruit has a short shelf life though and was not very marketable to be purchased. So the US and British research program both began breeding programs to develop disease resistant varieties, but sadly this was not successful either. It was difficult to find a product that would work, biology did not work, farms kept moving to healthier land, and this created schisms among companies and the government. The diseases were driving the production costs and soil exploitation up, fruit companies were already under public scrutiny for their land grabs and extensive holdings. As it becomes a successful market in Brazil, the supply is increasing as new companies join the market. The shifts have caused the market equilibrium of both the price and quantity to increase; between 2000 and 2009 the price increased up to 6000% (task sheet figure). The market has grown drastically, the supply increasing from 104 874 tonne in 2005 to 115 947 tonne in 2009 (IBGE, 2008, 2010). This market is efficient and is generating a gross net income without any intervention from the Government. However as the acai berry is exported, the local consumers have to compete with higher prices.
