This quote explains the necessity of making things clearer and simpler in our everyday lives. But more importantly, the message behind this quote can be used to define the need of technical communication for engineering students. Technical communication is the use of language to deliver technical information to several audiences in a manner that is adapted to their needs and level of understanding. Engineers and engineering companies stress that unless a student has the ability to effectively write and communicate, their technological and engineering skills are worthless. Due to this, students should have the capability to communicate in a simple and concise manner in order to deliver their ideas. For example, a group is given an engineering task to build a Lego robot. The leader of the group has to consider many aspects: dividing the tasks, items required, the structural design and programming. This could include how to program the robot, how to build it and what functions the robot can perform. Then the robot can be tested several times to see if it achieves the goals of the group. At the end, the leader would produce a report stating all the steps the group took and explain the results. In writing this report, technical communication plays a big role, because the report could be both lengthy and full of technical language or it could be simple and brief but still covering the main …show more content…
Examples include project managers, clients, and the public who usually read and analyze the reports, proposals or other writings of the engineers. Therefore it is crucial for the students to realize that there are other people besides engineers who will read the reports. To accomplish that, a student must avoid the use of highly technical terms, also known as jargon. The students should also define any terms they think their audience would not know beforehand. For instance, the figure on the right shows a report on how weapon testing lead to exposure of radioactive materials. The words used throughout the report are intended for an audience like the public or the company’s clients, who do not want to see every specific detail of the weapon testing experiments but would want to get educated about the harmful effects. Therefore, for an engineering student, it is necessary to keep the reports clear and simple in order for the message to be delivered correctly to the targeted

The article “Is Writing an Essential Skill for Engineers” by James Koelsch discussed how having the ability to write and communicate is a very important quality for all engineers to possess. In 2005, the City of Houston’s Bureau of Air Quality Control (BAQC) terminated the contract it had with a state agency, to conduct enforcement of state rules and regulations (Williams & James, 2009). Ranked consistently among the United States’ worst cities for air quality and pollution control, the previous collaboration with the state was ineffective with applications and processes that were cumbersome to maneuver through for both employees, entities, and citizens (Williams & James, 2009). The City of Houston’s BAQC implemented a new strategic plan, to internalize the functions the state previously handled, and included policy changes, better technology utilization, and most importantly, strategies for getting the community involved (Williams & James, 2009). The emphasis of this case study analysis will be on the technical communication aspects of the City’s plan to improve air quality.

Electrical engineering is a field that majorly involves the use of technology in the designing, developing, and testing electrical devices. Many scholars agree that technical communication, although considered a professional writing genre, could still be defined as separate from the communication used by business professionals (e.g. professors, business people, doctors, lawyers, etc.) To begin to understand writing in the workplace, one could start by defining what collaboration in the workplace is. Scholars Burnett, et al. describe collaboration in the workplace as communication that occurs across project groups, departments, divisions and other social configurations. This communication serves as a process that allows peers, specifically co-workers in this instance to interact and work together to achieve shared goals, both before and after the production of a text or document. Collaboration is important in the workplace because it enables social interaction amongst coworkers and encourages workers to communicate, help one another, and form productive relationships. While I was in high school, not only was I an active volunteer in several activities such as food drives and helping those in need, in addition to community work, but also I became invested in engineering sciences due to my perceptions regarding the importance of electrical engineering to an emerging industrial country such as mine. Therefore, as I was to graduate soon, I decided to specialize in this science as a student and future professional. Fortunately, through my undergraduate studies, not only did I found the science to be highly intriguing and vast giving way access to endless disciplines, but I have also found that it is very much correlated to numerous other sciences. This observation prompted me to further delve in my studies to become one day a well-informed engineer.
When a course on English for Engineering is designed after consulting with professional engineers, EST practitioners and students it is likely to be more effective than the course which designed without consulting the stakeholders. There are many courses which were identified to ineffective if they do not reflect the learner’s present and target needs. And it is mainly because the most of the courses are designed based on their experience. However, it becomes very important to understand the needs of the learners in the beginning and design the course on Engineering English which is based on the finding of the needs assessment.
Irrespective of the environment in which one works, communication is always vital and a key factor of success. Communication happens both physically and verbally and is absolutely essential if you want to inform someone about something. ‘Loud shouting and even violence are symptoms of the ailment, not remedies.’ (Adair 2009: 3). Communication has two main components; sending out a message to someone, and ensuring the message is received correctly to the other member of the conversation. It is thus fair to say speaking and listening are vital to effective communication. This essay will initially introduce me as a student, and my career. I will give a simple SWOT analysis of me and will then go on and breakdown the different methods and techniques of effective communication. Finally, I will talk about how effective communication is needed in my current position, as well as the future.
