As Edinger (2011) notes, although weaknesses can be improved, it is of more value that a leader further improve strengths by understanding complementary skills that can be reinforced. One may be able to improve weaknesses to ensure these weaknesses are longer obstacles in the workplace, however if these weaknesses are due to one’s values and personality they may never turn to real strengths. It is possible however, to improve strengths even further including those that are complimentary of other strengths (Edinger, 2011). Through self-assessment, one is able to understand areas of improvement and also positive strengths that may highlight the type of professional career that will be most rewarding. Throughout the varying self-reflection activities in the Masters of Management program, I have found that my strengths reside in communication and change management, however my weaknesses are in areas of finance and negotiation.
The structure of an organization also plays a key role in sustained success. The more processes and procedures that employees have to follow in order to get anything done the more inefficient the company becomes as a whole. A simpler organizational strategy can increase productivity and performance by removing process barriers. If implemented strategies prove to be unsuccessful, changing the organizational environment could be useful. Fostering decision making that is in line with company objectives is critical to future success and strategy development.
If both the leader and team members have all the necessary skills, then transformational leadership is seen as being worthwhile. This is because output, innovation and efficiency will increase, leading to an enthusiastic work atmosphere where teams are high
These things do take time, because remember, you dealing with human beings here who don't like change. Be patient, persevere; it will be worth the effort. In sum, through cooperation, perseverance, and much patience, you might be able to develop an empowered atmosphere at your company. Change dictates that old philosophies are no longer valid. Through thorough preparation, education, communication, and absolute commitment you might be able to develop empowerment techniques, but to truly reap empowerment's rewards, you must remember that employee motivation is the product of your reward system.
Managers who demonstrate the ability to lead with a vision and empower others to be their best are now, and will continue to be, selected for promotions. Those who recognize when and how to take appropriate risk, and accept the possibility of failure, are being acknowledged as the leaders of the future. Managers who demonstrate that they can achieve short-term operational results with the context of long-term strategic initiative will be the most competitive of all. There should be a increasing tolerance for managers who produce results “outside the box” and a reduction in the tolerance of managers who lay the blame for their lack of performance on conditions outside their control. Manager will need to pay attention not only to bottom-line results, but also to the methods and processes by witch those results are achieved.
If unresolved, this conflict can sabotage the team’s ability to function effectively. Even though in the end the tasks are all finished, the quality of the finished task and the time required to finish all the tasks makes multitasking very inefficient. In addition, this division of concentration is causing many people to not pay attention. For most, multitasking is a disadvantageous skill that should not be encouraged as a valid method of completing assignments. The majority of people who multitask may think that they are getting a lot of tasks done and gaining tons of information at the same time. However, most multitasking reduces one's ability to retain information and concentrate, it diminishes efficiency, and it creates stress.
“Dealing with today’s competition is challenge enough, even when you have all the right information. But if you are responding to wrong information, you could well be in losing battle”( b.b. turney). These words accurately show importance of relevant information and systems which allow managers to make good decisions. One of the most important issues of the analysis of the company’s business activities is determine their indirect costs.
As a result, managers frequently have a difficult time improving their decision-making capacity. Good business decisions are the heart of a successful organization. Without a process decisions may be made by the most powerful or influential person in the group or not made at all. Good decision-making is a balance between getting the most of what we want with as little risk as possible. It means that we include the right people and use a process that encourages participation while keeping or focus clearly on the decision at hand.
It is also important to ask, "Why do they want it?" It is equally important - and often more difficult - to ask the same questions about your own views. Many successful negotiators find they will be more successful if they focus on understanding their interests as they enter discussions. If they haven't started out with a perfect package, the ideas of others may actually improve their final result. Negotiators who arrive with a complete package can create real problems.
