Teaching and Modeling Homosexual Tolerance in the Public School System I am an advocate of acceptance and tolerance as well as equality for homosexuals. I am going to try and explain to you the course we as a society needs to take. I want to share with you the history of the world in relation to gay relationships, genetics, statistics, and Christianity in order to familiarize you with the topic in hopes of helping you see things my way. I will be doing all of this to try and persuade you to agree with me on the idea of supporting gay rights and equality in our society and in our public school system right here at home in America. This I believe will lay a foundation early on for future generations to understand and accept people different from themselves, or maybe to accept themselves, in a positive light. Whether or not to support and have sex education in our public school system is an important topic. I definitely think there should be sex education in every public school because sexual interest, as well as gender identity and adapting your role and behavior according to your gender, is an essential and natural part of life. One of the greatest theorists of all times, Sigmund Freud, agreed with me on this topic. "He recommended that sex education be handled by the schools, where children could learn about reproduction in their lessons on nature and animals. They themselves could then draw the necessary conclusions with respect to humans" (Freud, 1907). "Initially, children are concerned with the expectations for their own gender" (Martin Wood and Little, 1990). To me this could mean physical, mental, social, and sexual expectations. Ignoring that topic does not make it less likely kids, upon reaching a certain age, wi... ... middle of paper ... ... as equals, I will leave you with this: Society and the public school system needs fight for a change in the hearts, minds, laws, and public policies of America and its' people with the positive goal in mind of ending discrimination based on sexual orientation in order for a brighter more unified foundation to be laid for future generations.
