In this essay a range of strategies to support children and their families from culturally and linguistically backgrounds will be discussed using different perspectives and concepts. As suggested by Kaiser & Rasminsky (2003) “culture is like a second skin and it only becomes visible when we brush up against one that is different” (p.53).Culture is important part in our lives , it can include the food we eat , beliefs , values and the way we look at our world. As a teacher it is important to understand our own culture, before we try to understand children’s and families culture. The values, beliefs that teachers has developed from her/his past experiences has an influence on how and what they teach the children , so teachers should try not to let their personal views interfere with their teaching .Language is the way we communicate with one another around us, only through language we are able to convey verbal messages across. As teacher we need to have that openness, so that we can value the differences and make the families and children belonged at centres.
The article, “Diversity in Early Childhood Education,” by Francis Wardle, was enlightening on how early childhood educators need to build a homogenous classroom environment that resembles the family and the community that children reside in. Educators and administrators need to evaluate the classroom environment to incorporate diversity in the classroom so, that young children can feel socially competent about their culture. It is essential for educators to assist young children to gain knowledge through classroom experiences an additionally by exploring their community to build tolerance of individual differences nonetheless we can all be friends. It is the educator’s job to make all families feel invited to school activities. Halgunseth, Peterson, Stark, and Moodie (2009) suggest early childhood programs foster family engagement by creating an environment that is welcoming, visiting the parent’s home, encouraging two-way communication, providing opportunities for families to participate in classroom activities, and offering resources for home learning. An educator needs to invite parents into the classroom and extend the invitation to siblings, grandparents and close family members. Siblings may be much older or around the same age as the student, so it is important to offer activities for siblings of all ages to participate in with the student. Activities such as cooking or arts and crafts are easy ways to get the family involved and feel comfortable helping.
If you think the education system will do it all, think again. The parents of today need to be prepared, motivated, and of course, confident to help their children succeed. How do we prepare our children? First off, reading, reading, and more reading to children at an early age can give them a head start when they start school. Parents should not stop reading or helping their children when they do start going to school.
If the teacher teaches knowledge, then parents can develop the character of their children. They can teach how to live, how to work, how to face the problem. Dinner is a good time to communicate with children. Eating with family can let children get new vocabulary, and improve organizational competence. By listening to parents to describe the problem solving process, the children could also learn to solve similar problems in the future.
By inviting the parents to help come up with a plan to help their child, we are allowing the parents to still play a role in their child’s life. As educators we can meet with parents and ask them for help to gain knowledge about their child and what their needs are in order to learn about not only the child, but the child’s background. I believe that communication is key when it comes to collaboration with parents, if you aren’t open with them, they won’t be open with you. As educators we must keep an open communication window to parents and students in order to gain their trust and create a positive learning environment.

The first and best teachers are parents, and children watch and learn from them. They realize and come to understand many important characteristics and moral values. Parents who keep everything on schedule, prepare healthy meals and attend all school functions teach children the fundamentals of being dependable and trustworthy. When parents assign children chores as well and everyone works together as a family to accomplish these chores, it teaches them to be responsible adults. In addition, parents who respect each other and speak kindly towards others are setting examples in which children, too, will follow.

For example in a resource and technology unit such as a home economics, students will be asked name the different types of food groups and give two examples in each food group. Based on the results the teacher will focus on what the students don’t know by giving students researches, regular quizzes and oral question and answer sessions. Teacher can place students in groups to encourage cooperative learning.
