The first composer is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who was born on May 7, 1840, in Vyataka, Russia. When he was just five years old, he began taking piano lessons. In 1863, he moved to Moscow, where he became a professor of harmony at the Moscow Conservatory. At age 21 he decided to take more music lessons at the Russian Musical Society. In 1868 was the very first time Tchaikovsky’s work was publicly performed. In 1877 Tchaikovsky was struggling with societal pressures to repress his homosexuality so he married a music student named Antonina Milyukova. His body of work constitutes 169 different pieces, including symphonies, operas, ballets, concertos, cantatas and songs. He composed The Nutcracker in 1892 and ended up dying only a year later on November 6, 1893 in St. Petersburg (Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky). The Nutcracker was first performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. It premiered the week before Christmas.
