Taxonomic Assignment

Marine mammals are characterized by many shared traits. First, they are all mammals as determined by a set of characteristics including: being warm-blooded, having hair or fur, breathing air through lungs, bearing live young who are nursed with milk. All of these traits are evidence of a common ancestor shared with all other land-dwelling mammals before marine mammals transitioned to the seas.
Marine mammals have adapted to varying degrees over the years to their aquatic environment. In general, they have streamlined bodies for more efficient movement through the water due to lower resistance. Their limbs are also adapted to help them propel themselves. The nostrils are placed at the top of the head at the tip of the muzzle, and they have valves that keep them closed when the animal is submerged. Dugongs usually weigh about 30 kg and grow to around 1.15 m, with females tending to be larger than males. Both males and females have long white tusks, but they are more prominent in males. The tusks may have been used to dig up grasses in the past, but are now used for mainly for social interaction. To aid in its consumption of sea grasses, the dugong’s muzzle and mouth face downward and have muscular upper lips.
Unlike other Sirenians who have rounded tails, it has flukes similar to whales and dolphins which are moved up and down to propel the animal through the water along with its paddle-like front limbs.
