Taking a Look at Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural human instinct, without it we would have no desire to fight or flight but when those emotions become overwhelming or obsessive, people are unable to live a happy, normal life. Anxiety disorders be categorized into five different disorders by intenseness and persistence: generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Each unique disorder has their own guideline of how to be treated.
Let us start with defining what exactly anxiety is, according to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate® Dictionary (2012) “anxiety is a painful or apprehensive uneasiness of mind over an impending or anticipated ill, fearful concern of interest.” One with high levels of anxiety can be typically diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. Symptoms can range from excessive worrying (even when there are no signs of trouble) about health, money, family, work, or school. The excessiveness varies on every individual’s case but can lead to inability to relax, insomnia, irritability, irrational expectations, trembling or twitching, headaches, tiredness, muscle tension, frequent urination, and/or difficulty swallowing (Sussex.)
