Take-Home Three I have certainly conformed to numerous traditional gender roles. As a female I grew up in a culture where some female traditions included playing dress up, pretending to be a princess, and putting on makeup to look pretty. I have conformed to some of these cultural normality’s, and I have digressed from some of them. For example, I love what our culture considers girl colors. Also girly patterns and designs that most boys would scoff at. I love purples, pinks, sparkles, and anything pretty. I also love to gossip which is a behavior highly associated with girls. I do not enjoy sitting at home watching football and drinking beer on a Sunday. When it comes to playing sports though I find the girl part of me left behind. I am extremely competitive, and take losing very hard, and very seriously. I also love muscles, lifting, and the gym which is something males dominate in Observing my Dad has influenced my musical taste, taste in sports, and even ideas about life. These ideas have received so much positive feedback that it has become a part of me, and that is not something I was born with. It is something I was influenced by. So I associate the sporty side of me with my dad. Also from observing my mom I could see how girls were meant to act. She always had pretty jewelry, and pretty clothes that I loved, and was enormously influenced by. The media is also something that showed me gender roles, and even entertainment, and film. I looked up to the princesses in Disney movies, and dressed up like them, acted like them, and sometimes even talked like them. They taught me what it was to be a girl. Also I remember commercials of girls wearing pretty things, and makeup, and long beautiful hair. I was born on March 08, 1995 at roughly seven pounds. When I was extracted from my mother, I was given the gender of a male with the appearance of my male body parts. My mother used to say to me, growing up as a toddler that I had so much hair like former American Football player, Troy Polamalu. People had always assumed that I was a girl, therefore my mother had to correct them and say, “No, he is a boy”. Growing up a toddler, I was always wearing some type of jeans with a sports shirt and shoes that were mostly colored black or blue. As I grew older, I gained interest in baseball, wrestling, and the military. I always wanted to play with action figures such as GI Joe and wrestling celebrities in addition to imaginary flying in an apache helicopter or taking command in a battle tank. Advancing to my pre-teen years, I wanted to play baseball, which is considered to be mostly a boy sport. It was at this moment, that my gender was a boy. Progressing to my teen years, I started to observe my father and learn my gender on his roles as the man in our family. Going through my years in high school, I noticed that the guys who played sports got more attention than the ones who did not. We are expected to be athletic and good in many sports. Playing a musical instrument or acting was thought of as feminine and that idea made it difficult for many males to be involved in those activities.
Girls are told to stay indoors and play with their dolls or bake, while boys are encouraged to go outdoors, get dirty, and be adventurous. Wade and Ferree also state “sports are squarely on the masculine side of the gender binary” (Wade and Ferree, 174). Hence, we are brought up with the understanding that playing and talking about sports is a boy’s thing, which further promotes the notion that sports are a very masculine thing. Furthermore, as playing sports is competitive and is a way to show excellence, young boys are considered as “real boys” and “real men” later on. However, when boys do not talk about or play sports, they are considered feminine or “not real men.” The same rule applies for young girls. If young girls are too into sports, they are considered to be “too masculine.” This is true for me too. When I was younger, I was told to not play too much outdoors and to behave “like a girl.” The stigma that only boys should be allowed to play sports and it is not a feminine thing needs to be erased for us to welcome a more gender-equal
Gender differences are influences on gender behavior in the way that one must fit through the assumptions and inevitable confusion to distinguish the reality of the assumption. Men and women are obviously different inherently, but not in what they can and cannot do. Men and women are different and have different roles because this is society presented them to the world. Women have the most difficulty getting through these complicated times. There should be equality among all men and women of all races and ethnicity. This is a never-ending issue. We as a society should always know and act on the importance of gender roles, gender equality, and challenges with education in developed and developing countries.
My gender was impressed upon me from the minute I was born as I was wrapped in a fuzzy pink blanket and had a bow taped to my bald head. Gender refers to our behavior, feelings, and attitudes as dictated by our society or culture (Defining, 2015). Not only our family, but our peers, schools, and society influence and shape our beliefs and views about our gender (Defining, 2015). It is thought that our gender is socially constructed as our notion of what women and men are and what they are supposed to be is created by the society in which we live (Gender, 2010). As a female born and raised in Philadelphia in the United States in the 1960’s, my gender role, behaviors and attitudes expected of male and female members of a society by that society, was that of a passive, nurturing, and subordinate person.
There were several instances in my childhood when my Family had a direct influence on me according to my gender. Right from birth my role as an individual was predestined. The gifts I was to receive at a baby shower were all based around my gender. It would have been unheard of for someone to give me pink clothes or flowery decorations at my baby shower. Young boys have always been told not to cry when they fall and scrape their knees. Comments like these from family members definitely had an impact on my aspirations. My dream to be a fire fighter was most likely related to those comments to not cry. Being a fire fighter would definitely be an occupation where stress would be high. If I could be a fire fighter I would definitely have the opportunity to prove to my parents that I could be strong and not cry. In elementary school one of the most common phrase used was, “You can’t do that you're a girl.” Society puts gender stereotypes and expectations on children at a very young age. I never really understood these stereotypes and expectations until later in my life. I couldn’t figure out why it was that boys were not allowed to like the color pink, and if the girls wanted to play “boy” sports it was seen as unusual. My family consists of my parents, my sister and I; so I never had sibling of the opposite gender in my life. I didn’t have someone to compare gender differences with. I was given toys no matter what gender they were geared towards. I remember receiving hot wheels cars and baby dolls the same year for Christmas and never thought anything thing of it. I think that these experiences has really shaped who I am today.
It isn’t hard for me to think back to my gendered socialization, strictly because me being a man has been drilled into my head since the day that I was born. I was born on January 6th 1985 in a suburb of Olathe Kansas, and in Olathe high school sports are everything. I have pictures of me when I was five months old with cowboy outfits, and football uniforms. As I became old enough to walk, I was thrown into every sport possible. If a boy is born In a family, the family members would buy toys like monster trucks, race cars, action heroes. and toys that inspire male behavior. I intend to help the reader understand that femininities and masculinities is a social constructed concept and whether the binary categories of “male” and “female” are adequate concepts for understanding and organising contemporary social life with discussing the experiences of individuals and groups who have resisted these labels and forged new identities.
As a topic that exists in today 's society I chose to conduct two separate interviews for my writing class on "Gender and the workplace" , I interviewed Brittany Smith , who’s a women supervisor for GM (General Motors). As well as a Johnnie O 'Bannon, Who 's a manager for General Motors. Their “Experiences” differs between gender and workplace plays a major role on both women and men, and although O 'bannon and Smith doesn’t experience the same things everyday at their workplace, they have had similar experiences, used to work as regular employees before actually moving up, and has had related issues in the past, so it seemed like they have a good understanding of gender roles and work places. As it turned out, they both had bad experiences
Gender is the psychological characteristics and social categories that are created by human culture. Doing gender is the concept that humans express their gender when they interact with one another. Messages about how a male or female is supposed to act come from many different places. Schools, parents, and friends can influence a person. Another major factor that influences millions of impressionable females and males is television. Not only does the television teach each sex how to act, it also shows how one sex should expect the other sex to act. In the current television broadcasting, stereotypical behavior goes from programming for the very small to adult audiences. In this broadcasting range, females are portrayed as motherly, passive and innocent, sex objects, or they are overlooked completely or seen as unimportant entities.
