Tablets over Textbooks in K-12 Schools
Which would one prefer to carry on their back, one one-billionth of a gram or two tons? The average four-gigabyte tablet can hold 2,300 eBooks that only weigh one one-billionth of a gram. These books would weigh over two tons as printed textbooks. The implementation of tablets and eBooks instead of textbooks in K-12 schools would result in benefiting the future generations. This shift would result in developing more intellectual students, cause less damage to the health of the students and the environment, educate and prepare students on the technological world in which they live, and would be more cost efficient in the long run.

California’s Riverside United School District conducted an experiment on a large group of students preparing for a standardized mathematics test. Half of students were given a digital version on an Algebra 1 textbook with interactive features and the other half where given the printed version of the same book to prepare with. When the test results came out, the students who prepared with the digital learning materials scored 20% higher than those who used the printed textbooks (Tablets vs Textbooks, 2014). “We’ve gone far beyond the capabilities of an eBook to turn a one-way math lesson into an engaging, interactive, and supportive learning experience” says Bethlam Forsa, executive Vice President, global content and Product Development (Wright, 2012). In a rural Ethiopian village in, a non-profit organization donated tablets loaded with educations apps to the local school with no instructions. Within 2 weeks, the students were able to use all the apps correctly and significantly furthering their educational and technological knowledge. Last year the book and newspaper industry harvested 125 million trees, while the eBooks industry harvested zero trees and prevented the harvesting of million of more trees. Unlike eBooks that can be downloaded in a few seconds, textbooks need to be transported to their destination. This requires the burning of fossil fuels and more harmful car emissions being released into the environment. Unlike eBooks that leave a small carbon footprint, “reports assert that textbooks have the highest per-unit carbon footprint in the publishing sector”(Hustsko, 2009). Tablets also allow teachers to conserve ink and paper by not having use paper handouts, quizzes, and homework because students could access them virtually from their tablets. I’d rather have paper to write down and make my own citations and marks depending on the subject, but if I’m reading a novel, then using a tablet is great, and I’m able to carry as many books as I need. It’s amazing how technology has shaped our educational system over the years and especially in the last 10 years. Honestly, it was only a matter of time before we arrived at this crossroad. It still remains to be seen how this path will be navigated and implemented fully, but I’m excited to be on the journey.
Where ever you live and whatever grade you teach, technology has made it into the lives of teachers and students. Whether it is an ebook, laptop, iPad, computer, or Smartboard, they all have brought teaching literacy to a new level. These tools are not going to leave our classrooms, if anything they will impact the learning at new and higher levels. There will come a day, and I think it will be soon, that every student will have access to their own technology devices at school and at home. As teachers, we need to embrace technology and try and stay ahead of our students if possible.
In addition, textbooks are heavy to carry around and it takes longer to find a page. Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. Journalist Ellen Lee interview a student from Liberty University, and he states that he prefers digital textbooks because he can tap his iPad, opens the digital copy and quickly open the page. In the Wall Street Journal article, “Does Technology Belong in Classroom Instruction,” Lisa Neilson and José Antonio Bowen take opposing sides to the topic of technology being integrated into instructional material. Neilson argues that instructing students on using technology appropriately and effectively can benefit and prepare students for the fast paced future. She claims that the use of electronics in the classroom encourages students to expand their knowledge of assignments and improves their literacy. Neilson states that students use their digital devices to upload English papers and receive feedback from people all around the world, conducting virtual dissections, and utilizing resources to further their understanding (Neilson, 2015).

In the school year of 2011-12, over 13,700 US students aged 5 to 18 had to be treated in hospitals due to backpack related injuries (ProCon.org). These students were treated for contusions, sprains, fractures, and strains to the shoulders and back. The Archives of Disease in Childhood discovered that the average weight of a student’s backpack is about 15.4 pounds, while a tablet weighs about 1.25 pounds. Kids ages 5-18 should not be having to face problems that usually should not occur until later in life. The weight these textbooks are putting on students is too much, and are leading to problems...
Laptops are significantly more Eco friendly. The number of trees cut down annually for the production of books sold in the U.S. was estimated at 30 million in 2008. That is a ridiculous amount of trees to go into something with such an easy alternative. Replacing textbooks would not only benefit the students, but they would have a huge effect on the environment.
Many people argue that technology has made information from printed sources more available. “We can all come together immediately, live, in words or pictures, thanks to the power of cell phones, computers, televisions, and cameras. The way we socialize, learn, plan, and communicate are constantly improving because of advancing technology” (Walker). Walker continues to state that students can take classes that many small or poverty-stricken communities wouldn’t be able to offer. For example, foreign languages and advanced courses are some classes that small or poor communities just cannot offer in a classroom setting. 1.75 million students took these online courses last year, and it is predicted to increase to 10.5 million students by the year 2014. However, this has decreased the amount of textbooks sold. “According to a recent survey, 62 percent of students said they would choose an electronic textbook over a new print textbook” (“THEY WOULD SAY THAT....”). Many students are choosing electronic textbooks over print textbooks.
Electronic books have continued to rise in popularity. Literacy rates among college students continue to drop in the years since electronic books have hit the market (Rainie, L., Zickuhr, K., Purcell, K., Madden, M., & Brenner, J., 2012). Despite this, electronic books have continued to bring success to the companies that publish them. In 2011, Amazon announced that their electronic book sales had conquered the market and had out sold their all available print books (Griggs, 2011). Electronic books allow for a quick and easy way to hold, and navigate pages of information, and in theory, should help aid in a collegiate academic environment.
Every new generation that is born in the United States always seems to read physical books less than the previous. For many students today, the only physical books that they will ever bother reading are those that they have been assigned to. However, that does not mean that they are reading less, as they spend most of their day reading text messages on their phone, or looking at status updates on social media websites. Even in the pursuit of knowledge, many would rather simply search for an article on the subject rather than read a lengthy book with more details. Paper has officially been replaced with iPads. Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system. Textbooks are reliable, they can be used by anyone, and there are enough textbooks for each student to have their own, and be able to take them home. Also, technology is impacting the way the brain receives information. Reading digital print isn't as productive for readers as printed text, and there is limited access to resources needed for tablets to be effective when used by students. While this is true there are benefits to using tablets and other forms of technology in the classroom. It is easier for teachers to have assignments emailed directly to them, or post assignments on the internet, the use of technology is required in many core classes, and textbooks are easily worn, and expensive.
Tablets can help improve the way students attain their studies. According to Cam Lincoln “Students who used the iPad version of the textbook scored 20 percent higher on standardized test versus students who learned with traditional textbook”(parag.2).This demonstrates that, students who used the iPad version of the textbook learned more effectively than the students who learned with traditional textbooks. As more people began to access the Internet through smart phones and tablets rather than laptops and computers, it is not a surprise that they would also want to transform the American education system by bringing tablets into classrooms. In fact, a few schools around the country have already replaced textbooks with tablets and have seen improvements in students’ standardized test scores. Using tablets instead of textbooks is not only convenient and helpful, but it can also reduce the amount of paper wastes in school. However, it is not a good idea to completely transform textbooks with tablets with the current technology, for it can not only be damaging to the environment and costly to set up, but also might not be effective in improving K-12 education in the long run.
