If the world doesn’t pay attention soon, a key part to our energy redemption may fade into oblivion. Tidal power is the powerful unknown entity within the international alternative energy scene. Sadly, tidal power still has yet to be tested or implemented nearly as much as it should be (MCT). On top of this, not enough is even known about it on a public and even a professional level. But why is this the status quo? There is a significant amount of potential for tidal power on the coasts of many countries, including the United States. Tidal power is utilized in two strikingly different ways, and they both have different construction impacts and energy output. The first finished form of tidal power collection installed is commonly called a tidal barrage. Barrages closely mirror hydroelectric power stations as they dam up and area and receive energy by the flow of water. The other common form of tidal power is a tidal fence, which unlike the barrage allows water to flow freely, but energy is collected through a series of spread out smaller turbines (Helston). Both have enormous potential in the global energy market as forms of electricity collection. Investors and governments should look and see how much potential tidal power has in the market, and escape all the negative press surrounding it. Despite some negatives, tidal power is a worthy component in a full alternative energy switchover plan for any country on the planet. Of all countries currently pursuing alternative energy, the United Kingdom has been one country actively pursuing tidal well. Marine Current Turbines, a tidal power company in the UK, sees the potential of 16,000 new jobs and 15 million homes worth of electricity coming from plans to build a large tidal power s... ... middle of paper ... ...ced by barrages or fences is a technology that has a long way to go, but incredibly potential for humanity. Countries should embrace tidal power and include it in their plans to reform the sources of energy active in respective countries. Investors and companies alike should jump on the tidal bandwagon because of the enormous potential their for cheaper consumer costs and low maintenance (Helston). Despite small disadvantages, ignoring this amazing opportunity because of them would be a horrendous mistake for the world community. Tidal power cannot be our only source, it will not cover all of our energy needs, but it can supply an enormous amount of energy. Perhaps if it would become a little less of an unknown entity we could use it to our advantage. Tidal power has so much potential for the world. Give tidal power a little more sympathy, it’s not the devil.
