In Paul Bunyan's book, The Pilgrims Progress many characters symbolize the many hardships a Christian faces in their walk with God. Thus, Christian and Hopeful are quite symbolic in their own ways. When Christian embarks on his journey to the celestial city he seeks to find the truth in his faith and his religion. This clearly symbolizes a person who has trouble finding meaning in their faith. They struggle to try to find the meaning in their walk with God, this may be a struggle for many in this day and age.

Much how Christian leaves his home, and his family believing that God will destroy the city for its wicked sins and so starts on a journey to the celestial city where he can live for God, just as someone would leave behind worldly things to pursue a life with God. …show more content…

When Christian meets Hopeful at Vanity Fair, Hopeful didn't believe in Jesus but later comes to Christ after meeting Christian. This is symbolic in the way that when a person has not been saved yet and meets someone who is a Christian impacts them, in which they are later saved. Hopeful is also symbolic in a way that his name suggests, that he brings hope. Such as when Christian and Hopeful were imprisoned in Doubting Castle and the Giant suggest that they commit suicide to escape. Christian believes they should having lost hope but Hopeful is there to talk him down and tell him not to give up.

Hopeful provides hope and advice to Christian on their journey to the celestial city. Just as a good friend, a pastor, or a mentor would provide to someone who has stumbled on their walk with God. Hopeful is always there to provide support, comfort and overall stability in his and Christians journey. This shows that in the long term, to recognize the love and faith that God gave to his people, a hopeful attitude is necessary.
