Symbolism in Yann Martel’s Life of Pi and Beach Glass, by Amy Clampitt

The literary device of symbolism appears in a vast amount of stories and novels. When everyday words actually mean something completely different, it exemplifies the meaning of the word symbolism. Symbolism usually takes a keen understanding of the work and how the author views the particular work. Symbolism presents itself in the novel Life of Pi: A Novel in copious amounts. Yann Martel placed many words with different meanings well and throughout Life of Pi: A Novel. The short story “Beach Glass”, by Amy Clampitt also obtains a lot of symbolism and these symbols compare akin and contrary to the representations found within the story Life of Pi: A Novel. Pollution, dwellings, and the ocean all appear as different symbols in both works of literature.

A scene in “Beach Glass” compares and contrasts with certain parts of the Life of Pi: A Novel. This section of “Beach Glass” speaks about a “shipwreck”(Clampitt 701) and other stuff found in the ocean. At first, this section appears on the outside to pertain to an actual ship that had crashed. The ship crashing in “Beach Glass” and in Life of Pi: A Novel appear as a similar topic. These scenes speak about how the crashing of a ship affects both Pi and the story of “Beach Glass”. But looking at “Beach Glass” as a whole gives a deeper meaning than just one ship crashing. The wreckage and all of the different things found in the ocean actually compares more to the overall pollution within the water. Both stories contain pollution within their respective oceans. The pollution symbolizes the decaying state of the oceans and how the pollution keeps piling up without anyone to take care of it. ... religion and ancient history. Symbolism explains certain events without blatantly speaking them aloud. Finding Symbolism within a work may take a little scratching of the surface. Or, it may take a huge mining operation to find all of the symbolism. Authors use symbolism in both small and grands works of writing. Symbols appear in short stories and novels. The novel Life of Pi: A Novel and the short story “Beach Glass” contain similar symbolism. Pollution, homes, and the oceans lack of caring all make appearances within “Beach Glass” and Life of Pi: A Novel. These symbols compare and contrast nicely together. These symbols in both stories makes the reader understand the concept that the Yann Martel and Amy Clampitt attempt to get across. Reading and understanding these symbols lead to a deeper and more accurate understanding of these works of literature.
