Brought to the scene

We were brought in to the 1840’s to witness a murder. In a cask of amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe Montresor a younger man portrays his plan to get revenge on his “friend”(p.237) fortunato. Fortunato has spoken ill of montresor's name and he will not show any remorse to him anymore, he states “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could”(p.236) being that he had done terrible things to him over there years. He plans to kill him using his fortunato’s stubborn pride to his advantage. This story is set in the early 1840’s during the carnival in italy right next to where carnivals first started, in greece. “Your vaults are many, and large. There seems to be no end to them.” (p 237) Montresor was taught that if someone besmirches your name you must have revenge on them. That is a huge sign of strength to do something like that for the small injustice of someone talking bad about your name. Italian families are known to be strong families but to push that kind of life on all of your family is disgusting. Edgar allen poe does not portray remorse until the very end of fortunato’s life when he says “May he rest in peace.” (p. 238 ) “Nemo me impune lacessit.” means no one attacks me with impunity.(p.238) The meaning is a severe sign that fortunato is in danger but the reader does not know what the family motto actually means. The motto is a symbol of control. Without this motto fortunato would not have been killed and montresor would not feel obligated to kill him. Montresor being controlled by the family motto is a sign of control like the control montresor has over fortunato Fortunato thinks practically nothing of montresor he talks bad about his “friend” and imitates his intelligence Without fortunato being rude to him he would not have been killed. .Fortunato does not even imagine that montresor could do such a thing …show more content…

Montresor fills fortunato with wine and he is about to keep put him in the wall and keep him with the wine dead in a case. Until the next sorry soul that besmirches montresor’s family name. Fortunato is an empty soul and his only purpose is to drink wine and die.montresor believes that if Fortunato will talk bad about his friends then he deserves what is coming to him. Portraying fortunato as such an empty soul makes it easier for Montresor to do what he did to him. The toast resembles irony in the words they toast.“Thank you, my friend. I drink to the dead who lie sleeping around us.” “And I, Fortunato — I drink to your long life.”(p.238) When montresor breaks the bottle with a stone and they toast in the vaults right before montresor kills fortunato he toasts to his long life. Fortunato toasts to the dead which he is about to join as a symbol of irony. Not knowing what is about to happen to him he drinks and he drinks to a point where he is drunk.He made a toast to make sure the dead are respected not knowing he was about to become a part of
