Several individuals say words do not necessarily have importance, but instead, channel power and significance dependent on the relationship with the word in its context. The same goes for three main objects in the novel Requiem: “ How can something have the power to shatter you to dust-and also to make you feel so whole?” (Oliver 56). Lena and her associates have one central objective, to provide everybody the opportunity to decide for themselves. By destroying the wall in Lena’s hometown, Portland, she will be able to take one stride closer to living in amity. Primarily, the fence keeps people in, just like the government keeps people in line. The government wants to suppress the rampant invalids, and make them seem to be the pinnacle of destruction. The electric fence is the reason Alex did not cross over into the Wilds with Lena. This is an example of separation between the different lives of people in the Zombieland or in the Wilds. Consequently, if one were to break the rules, they would die, just like touching the electric fence. The electric fence is related to Lena and Hana because both of them have been faced with life threatening situations, no matter how different they may be. The oh-so-perfect Hana has broken the rules proclaimed by the government, and sometimes she too feels like she should have tried to escape with Lena and AlexJ. Furthermore, there are startling oversights in both the electric fence and the government. Lena has been struggling with deciding whether to be with Jillian or Alex. The green shirt symbolizes the start of something new. The green shirt helps with the plot of the story, because everyone can stop fighting because they knew they took over Portland and they could stop killing people. Additionally, Lena found Grace. Grace immediately forgave Lena right after they reunited, and this is an example of how the green shirt brought the Resistance together. Lena promised to come back for Grace, just as Alex promised to find Lena again. After reading the ending of this novel, one can predict that all of the promises were kept and everything turned out all right for the main characters in this series. Lastly, the wall was extirpated. The green flag shows the victory of the Resistance taking over Portland and bringing down the wall separating the Wilds from the unreal life. Bringing down the wall sparked hope into the rest of the Resistance, making them think they can actually start making a difference.
