In the book, looking for Alaska one of the main event would be all the main characters are underage smokers. Therefore, in my opinion I think the author John Green made all the characters smokers to symbolize for the purpose of smoking. Over time nowadays, many kids smoke because it make you "cool" or they get peer pressure by friends to smoke. For instance, one of the main character Pudge starts to smoke because all of his friends smoked. Pudge states " I figured that if everyone else could smokes, I could to (page 18)." So in my opinion, teen smoking is a symbolize of young people's ability to make their own choices, even if those choices are not always good ones. It really simple to just listen to your parents and do what they tell you
