Symbols in stories Authors use symbols as a representation for the character that is part of their identity that wasn’t clearly stated. They select an image, picture, or anything that represent the character in the best way possible. This can be seen in the short story, “The Flowers” by Alice walker. It is clear the flowers the protagonist pick represents her identity. In this story, the symbols show character development and this makes it so the protagonist is liked and to make an interesting backstory. In the short film “Identity” by KJ Adams, the symbols of the mask shows how the students hind behind who they aren’t. This effects the reader by showing what the students are hiding behind in a concrete way instead of an abstract way. Both authors use symbolism in order to show how the character that keeps the story interesting and readable. Many authors use symbols as a representation, and it makes the reader either ponder about what is going on or to make the story more clear. For example, as it was stated before the flowers in the story “The Flowers” have 2 different meanings at the beginning and at the end. In the beginning “she skipped lightly” and at the end “she laid down her flowers” these are before and after the flowers change from the protagonist’s fun, to a new respect. The flowers don’t only change in her identity, for example in this story this also serves as the climax and changes the mood from positive to negative, but in this story their representations aren’t clear. In Identity, the protagonist takes of her mask and like in “The Flowers” it changes the mood. The real purpose can be how the protagonist changes her mask, this makes her mask an abstract concept and it shows how she doesn’t fit in. The mood is a way to see how it changes because the mood changes with the representation showing the character
