Pinterest is an online bulletin board social network that allows users to repin different things they like to different virtual bulletin boards, follow users with similar interests, and share things they find interesting on the platform. Although Pinterest is a popular social network in general, because of the affinity for the site to be used for DIY projects, recipes, crafts, home decor, and recent fashions, it especially excels within the adult millennial demographic and tech-savvy moms looking for opportunities to get more organized and find fun activities to do with kids. The inherent weakness of Pinterest as a social network is that the popularity and continued growth of social networks is entirely cyclical. The story of MySpace has served as a cautionary tale to all social networks that the life growth-share matrix of social networks operates a lot more quickly than it did in the days of companies like Polaroid. Even as marketers gain traction with the content being posted on Pinterest, the platform itself needs to be versatile and translatable to other growing social networks as well. In the same way that companies like Facebook have acquired Instagram and Twitter have acquired Vine and Periscope, Pinterest is presented with a great opportunity to expand through similar acquisitions and mergers to further the mission and vision for Pinterest in the long term. In this way, they can diversify their revenue streams in the long term and remain relevant, even after the inevitable plateau of user growth. Finally, an inherent threat to Pinterest is the use of other social networks with access to a broader user demographic. Because Pinterest’s user demographic is so niche, it can serve as a limiter to company growth in the long term. Their value proposition is that they deliver quality, shareable content to an inspired user base, excited to purchase products that turn their spaces and lives into Pinterest-worthy spectacles. They keep users through continuing to offer different ways for them to find new content. As a social network, the growth of users on the platform creates more opportunities for users to gain relationships and content through following each other.
