Barangaroo is a suburb located in the city of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. This suburb is on the northern side of Darling Harbour and southern side of Sydney Harbour Bridge. Barangaroo was part of the territory of the Cadigal people1, the traditional residents of the Sydney city region. It was established in 1788 as Cockle Bay Point and name as Millers Point in 1820 and finally changed to Barangaroo with area of 2200 hectares and population of 189 people2.
In 2003, the NSW Government announced that the stevedoring wharves at East Darling Harbour would be transformed into a new urban precint3. An international design contest was launched in 2005 with 139 submissions from all around the world. This $6+ billion development marks the transformation of Sydney’s Harbour docklans into a sprawling public, residential and commercial precinct.

The suburb of Pyrmont on the shores of Sydney Harbour has been transformed by the processes of urban renewal into a thriving cosmopolitan residential area, an efficient and sophisticated business centre, and a popular recreational and tourist hub. When first getting off of the plane at Sydney’s international airport, there was a familiar ambience that seemed to float around the series of rooms and halls to get to the exit. The airport seemed just like any other with the terminal, customs, and baggage claims. It’s when I walked outside that I noticed an unfamiliar, but refreshing, sense of place.
