Fabiola Contreras Professor Foster Music 19 2 August 2014 Concert Report What drew me to the film, “Sweeny Todd,” was the fact that it was a musical thriller. It is interesting how far a man would go in terms of revenge. The violence and gory images in this film are what make the audience understand the frustrations that led Benjamin Barker to integrate himself as Sweeny Todd, a man who opens a barber shop and strictly kills those who enter the shop, seeking revenge for the death of his wife. Most importantly, I am a huge fan of thrillers and love watching films that have me jumping off the edge of my seat. Together, they have a daughter whose name is Johanna. This little family is portrayed to be the happiest family held until the aggressive Judge Turpin finds interest and lusts Lucy. Later, Benjamin was falsely accused of a crime he did not commit and was sentenced to fifteen years of prison, separating him from Lucy and his daughter, in order to have Lucy to himself. Judge Turpin later abuses Lucy, which lead her into committing suicide. After fifteen years of prison in Australia, Benjamin returns to London with the new identity of Sweeny Todd, in search for his family only to find that his wife had swallowed arsenic and that his daughter was in custody of Turpin. Much like Lucy, Turpin lusts after Johanna and feels the wants to marry her. Later, Todd opens up a barber shop above the widow, Mrs. Lovett’s, meat pie shop, where he slits the throats of those who caused him and his family much harm, which definitely includes Judge Turpin. This inspires Mrs. Lovett to make pies out of human flesh and blood.
