Abstract: The world moves towards development rapidly. All the countries are in race of bringing development to their fellow being for better life and advancement in life. The mass is moving towards achieving better life perspectives. Many thinkers have given their views on development but the bench mark of keeping the development along with preserving the nature and respecting human beings. The present paper focuses on the environmental, economic and social aspect of development along with keeping in mind the sustainable development and sustainable development goals. The impact of present development to the future generation will depict and will suggest the ways to sustainable economic development. The paper will also access the impact of global change, climate change on sustainable development. Key Words: Sustainable Development, Climate Change, Economic Development Introduction: India has, over the past years, directed its development pathway …show more content…
The Agenda also identifies, in its paragraph 14, climate change as “one of the greatest challenges of our time” and worries about “its adverse impacts undermine the ability of all countries to achieve sustainable development. Increases in global temperature, sea level rise, ocean acidification and other climate change impacts are seriously affecting coastal areas and low-lying coastal countries, including many least developed countries and Small Island developing States. The survival of many societies, and of the biological support systems of the planet, is at risk”. Sustainable Development Goal 13 aims to “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact”, while acknowledging that the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is the primary international, intergovernmental forum for negotiating the global response to climate
The clock is ticking! Global Co2 emissions have increased exponentially since the industrialization of today’s developed world. Emissions have now passed the absorptive capacity of the earth and are accumulating in the earth’s atmosphere, warming the surface of the earth and inducing localized climatic changes. Climate change is often a localized issue. Many regions of the world will continue to become hotter, while others may experience highly variable weather patterns. Climate change poses a serious threat to ecosystems, economic sectors, and human welfare. Although almost entirely caused by the developed world, climate change will disproportionally affect the world’s poor.
Although it is often a topic for contention in politics, global warming over the span of several decades, has led to climate change, which has had an alarming impact globally. Climate change needs to ...
There also seems to be disputes among the faction of society that believe that even if better living standards and conditions for its citizens are achievable, the question is what is the right method to take in order to achieve it. Development economics is a very interesting topic, as it tends to raise different important issues in the society. According to Peet and Hartwick, ‘it has the power to move people’ . As a result of this, many conflicts revolve around development and its usage because it varies from political agendas to social reforms as well as reasons that do not necessarily adopt the main goal of the term development. Development as a definition is supposed to mean a more level playing ground for all in terms of better economic conditions, yet some use development as a means to gain riches and
Humans have become a threat to our own way of life by consuming more resources than needed, blind to the consequences that we may face in the future. As of 2016 the world population is at 7.4 billion and it is estimated to be at 11.2 billion by the year 2100. However 10 billion is the maximum population that can be sustained in terms of food security, only one of the many factors to global sustainability. Due to the fact that human consumption exceeds the amount of resources available, the United Nations “recognizes that eradicating poverty is the greatest global challenge” in A/RES/70/1. Sustainable development is not only required to fulfill the necessities of the present but to guarantee the capability for future generations to satisfy theirs.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines development as the act or process of growing or causing something to grow larger or more advanced. We live in a world that is continuously developing, in ways that we cannot even begin to try to describe. Nonetheless, The World Bank measures indicators of development. To do this, they look at three-hundred and thirty-one different indicators which cover a vast number of areas, including agriculture, aid effectiveness, climate change, economic policy, education, energy and mining, environment, the financial sector, poverty, science and technology, social development, and urban development. The World Bank’s World Development Indicators data is has been used for over fifty years as the standard by which development is measured. While this list may seem like a comprehensive, all-inclusive list, it does not consider the idea of sustainable development. While development for the sake of advancement may seem like a good option for an undeveloped country, it can be argued that development that is not sustainable is not development at all, but merely the illusion of one.
… [Most of the observed warming over the last 50 years is likely to have been due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations” [p. 21 in (4)]”. This assessment evidently shows that global climate change is real and it’s not a hoax as many politicians and people believe but a direct result of human activities. There are numerous facts that show that our planet is under tremendous stress while at the same time humanity will experience a growing crisis, which will be unavoidable if proper policies are not taken into consideration. We, as a society, need to understand the actuality concerning global climate change and its environmental impacts. That is why we need to take measures to protect and to provide sustainable initiatives in order to save our planet. Although it 's nearly impossible to predict the future about the effects of global warming, the facts hold that human activities will continue to transform the planet. For example, according to
The first climate change discourse presented is the threat to national security. “A threat caused or could possibly be related is armed conflict and climate change (Kaplan, 1994)”. The second discourse is human security to climate change. This discourse has various opinions and views. Some advocates believe that pathogens are the number one risk to human security due to climate change. Others believe that the environment is human’s biggest problem with climate change. The third discourse to climate change is international security. International security could be at risk if “climate induced agriculture challenges encouraged population movements were as groups confronted each other over scarce natural resources (Moon, 2007)”. The last climate change security discourse discussed was the ecosystem. Ecological security was the least popular out of all four discourses. Ecological security needs more support if it wants to be recognized like the previous three discourses. Various organizations are continuing to create better documentation that links humans to environment.
The word sustainable Development beginning first with sustainable means conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources and the word development a progress of quality and quantity from lower level to more advance, mature and complex of stage. If we compared these two word together sustainable development makes a complex global meaning which is ambiguity to define with easy terminology, meaning our fundamental commitment of the future balancing and avoiding and trying to eliminate the negative impact using the word sustain to compromise and meet the future generations needs and expectation depend on nature. The ambiguity definition of Sustainable Development it operationally and according to Roger approved definition by UN General Assembly 1983”Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ (Brundtland Commission, 1987; cited Rogers et al, 2008: p. 48)”
Sustainable development is improvement that achieves the needs of the people currently without compromising the capability of coming
In conclusion, global climate change is a very long discussion with many ways to improve the environment, but a long journey to finding a solution. Although we can 't do away with our main sources like power plants, cars, and factories we must continue to find solutions to making our environment safer and suitable to live in. Hopefully in the near future we will have a better understanding of how to address our global climate changes, but for now, we can focus our ideas on preventative ways to not harm ourselves and our
This paper analyzes the definitions and the complex relations among those three concepts; focus on the importance of sustainable development and give some suggestions to the government. If the existing system of environmental protection be reformed and innovated, and provide adequate economic incentives the win-win situation of environmental and economic growth can be achieved.
In international parlance, development encompasses the need and the means by which to provide better life for people in poor countries and it includes not only economic growth, although that is crucial, but also human development like...
Economic growth heavily relies on our natural resources therefore they play a pivotal role in our world today. However, economic theory suggests that being environmentally sustainable limits economic growth. Strong sustainability, which is what we should aim to achieve is outlined as; The existing stock of natural capital must be maintained and enhanced because the functions it performs cannot be duplicated by manufactured capital (Hart, 1998). In more recent years there has been in an increase in debates over sustainable development and how it is meant to be achieved. One factor hindering this is the poverty environmental trap is very common in developing countries. This trap is defined as the relationship between the poverty condition and the degradation of the environment (Finco, 2009). Some studies show that there is a connection between poverty and the environment as higher levels of poverty imply less environmental sustainability i.e. more natural resources being exploited. According to the
Development is about change. Change for the better. Development is about making a better life for everybody. “A better life for everyone” might mean different things in different countries and contexts, and the idea is not restricted only to the developing world. In a world full of inequalities, a better life means first of all, meeting
Sustainable Development is becoming the new “it” word in today’s society. Companies, governments, organizations, NGO’s and individuals all around the world today boast about how they are part of the global Sustainable development movement. That is why it is necessary to understand what Sustainable Development really represents, its definitions and key concepts, real life examples and its future. For the purpose of this paper the most widely acknowledged and used theory of Sustainable Development published in the Brundtland Report shall be used:
